Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Many folks are working from foreign countries now?

Is this allowed? They are getting compensated at the US level but they flee into low cost countries?

Is this allowed? Ethical?

This is not as common as you might think due to time zone differences between Asian and European countries and the US. Moving within the US is probably more common. Lot's of people have temporarily moved out of expensive cities to lower cost regions or to be closer to their family. Rent in SF and New York have plummeted as a result. The pandemic is hard on everyone, so everyone should have some freedom to try to make the best of the situation.

I've been working outside the country since April. It's been fantastic. Thanks for asking!

If the job is getting done while not inconveniencing coworkers or leadership, should it really matter?

You come across as being extremely petty. It’s pathetic.

Were you the student in class who felt the need to remind the teacher to assign homework right before being dismissed on Friday?

check with your CPA as working in another country requires a visa and paying foreign taxes

They still pay US taxes and that's one less person competing for housing near Nike and clogging the road with their vehicle. At this point, nobody is sure when bringing people back to the office is safe, so why force your employees to be 100% and stuck in PDX? People are just trying to do what's best for their situation. Maybe focus on what's best for you and stop worrying so much about others.

The question is incomplete. As in your argument assumes people are doing this for an extended period of time. That they are fleeing to low-cost countries. Employees HAVE to report change of address especially when they are out for an extended period of time. HR has policies in place where an individual will be taxed in USD regardless of where they live. That, in itself is not an incentive to move to a low cost country.
I agree with most opinions over here. If this bothers you, you need to re-examine your life.

it is my understanding nike hr is telling mgr their employees can not live/work out of the state for more than 5-6 months.

Remote is remote, whether it’s an exec working from their yacht or a peon from whatever country.

Nike is not reimbursing for employee WFH expenses and pockets the savings from lower operating costs. Is that any less “ethical”?

Capitalism isn’t only ethical for corporations.

I’m going to not assume like the others that this is what’s bothering you( if that’s true then that’s just unfortunate more than anything else).

If the quality of work you are delivering is not impacted by you working remote from another country and your team is okay with it — I don’t see why this would be a problem, and under these same assumptions ethics would come into question either.

Yes and yes. Not that it’s your business.
