Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Timing and size or US Layoffs?

If it is similar to Europe (15-20%) and most operational (factory/field) workers are spared then it seems could be 30-40% at the campus? Any idea on timing? Still nothing on WARN.

Rumored US severance is 2-2-1

Is this prediction also for chemicals? Or is chemicals more likely to just get sold?

Also, what CL classes would be most affected? And wouldn’t middle management be more likely to be let go than the individual contributor (assuming that the individual makes far less and does more of the actual work)?

Finally, what do you think the severance will look like? I’ve heard in the UK and Australia they are getting 1 years pay as part of their package.

@3vpm+17k5g0Z3 Why do you say stuff like that? Is it because you are anonymous and you don’t have to worry about your real identity?

Pre-covid occupancy is listed as 13200 for campus but there are lots of folks that are home based as well on top of that number in many of the organizations.

How many are on campus these days?

30~40% seems very likely. Some functions may just be gutted entirely.

DW’s email said he’s having a forum at the end of the month. Would imagine the lay-off announcement, ahem I mean strategic realignment, will come before or during that.

Is OCA the same thing as wage? We have a lot of OCA and MPTS doing similar office work, except OCAs are excluded from supervisor track.

@1xwk+17k5g0Z3, some admins are MPTs, and some are OCAs. For one, ESAs are MPTs.

whoever stated MPTs include admins is wrong. The are OCAs...admins and technicians fall under this umbrella.

@1sbt+17k5g0Z3 evidence? Last time I checked XOM profit/employee ratio was significantly higher than all other majors but one I believe.

If there is something coronavirus taught us... MPTs don't keep the plants running. So there's that..

Post ID: @1acp+17k5g0Z3

Keep in mind also that the MPT personnel are on average more highly compensated that the wage workforce due to numerous factors. So the company gets a bigger reduction in salaries and benefits by cutting MPTs. Its not personal. It’s just the math.

No amount of layoff is big enough for a poorly organization like ExxonMobil. The main reason is they will keep cutting the poor first leaving the useless management for later. As long as a single supervisor or manager is left in the ExxonMobil the cancer remains and the layoff need to continue.

In my opinion the only cure for ExxonMobil survival is a 100% layoff. Wait what a paradox!

When invoking an exception to the WARN Act’s 60-day notice requirement, a covered employer
is still required to:

  1. Give as much notice to employees (or the employees’ representative(s)) and State and

local government officials as is practicable (which may, in some circumstances, be notice
after the fact); and

  1. Include a brief statement of the reason for giving less than 60-days’ notice along with the

other required elements of a WARN notice.

Look up "unforeseeable business circumstances" exception to the WARN act 60 day notice obligation. It's a pretty massive loophole.

Are you sure they have to notify WARN? I looked at list of other company notices and didn't see any from chevron or other big oil majors. Didn't they recently conduct a layoff?

Regarding WARN - a lot of the protections appear to have been suspended due to COVID - both at state and federal level. Doesnt look like the law has the teeth that it used to. Bottom line - don't count on 60 days notice.

BPR is beyond a joke. I loved the part where we should always use/choose the most ethical basis even if local laws allow a less ethical approach. You think that's how they'll handle layoffs? NOPE.

EM is all about metrics. The profit / headcount of this company is lower versus competitors. Need more reductions vs others to beat compitition!

My expectation is it will be this year so the company can avoid having to pay for the additional vacation days people will gain in January. They won't blink to lay people off on Christmas day.

Had forum with refining director yesterday. His words were that there will be very little impact to wage. Almost all redundancies will be from MPT. Studies still progressing and can't say anything else! Just that we will follow all local laws for layoffs (or PIPs) for headcount reductions BOTH for severance and if needing to provide voluntary/involuntary reductions.

My understanding for us was... Expect the bare minimum to be paid out to you if you are let go. Don't expect people close to retirement to be able to volunteer to meet headcount targets. Refining director literally stated during the call that his family is protected from this layoff. Don't expect anything but coldness from the upper management.

Don't believe it? Let's see how much wage gets PIP'd come end of October.

That seems such a large percentage on the Houston campus! I know other major oil companies are not doing such major employment lay-offs. But I guess EM is in worse shape than others. Although EM is a U.S.based company....zone would hope it wouldn’t be that high of 50%. why do you feel 50%

It will come Nov 1. All the info on delays to that is false rumor some facilitated by the company to lull people into a temporary security so they keep working. Latest deadline of worked PiPs are over Oct 30. It has to be after that. Keeping extra vacation accrual for that large of a number of people is significant. Nov 1. Be ready.

Likely won't lay off everyone at once. More likely a gradual reduction to shift work to BTC and KL. Can guarantee minimal if any impact to operations. All reductions will be from MPT.

When we are getting close to the layoffs happening, it will either be immediately communicated to the entire company or function (have heard very little as of now, so really keeping it under wraps) or leaked out to media as supervisors are being made aware of layoffs coming and how to prepare.

If the legal requirement is 60 days notice, it would make sense to do it by oct 30 to prevent 2021 vacation accrual on the last day of the year. Any lawyers here that can see a reasonable path for EM to avoid the WARN requirements?
