Honeywell PMT HQ moving from Morris Plains, NJ to Houston TX

Yesterday, the CEO of Honeywell PMT (Performance Materials & Technologies) announced that by July 31, 2020, global headquarters would be relocated from NJ to Houston. My position, as I learned through a call from the VP of Human Resources and the CCO, is one of those affected. On the call, they told me how much I was valued as an employee and that they were hopeful I would make the decision to move to TX with the division. Shortly after said meeting, I received a letter that stated quite clearly that we have two choices: move or be terminated - and what's more, they consider a refusal to move to be a "resignation" and thus not eligible for severance.

They had a virtual Town Hall in the afternoon and folks were understandably upset about the timing of the announcement, specifically moving the division to a COVID-19 hotspot and providing a company-paid visit to Houston to "familiarize [us] with the area" that would have to be taken before December 18. Someone else asked whether changing positions to remote would be an option, and the CEO shot them down immediately, stating that while he appreciates the efforts made by employees to make the best of their situation during the lockdown, Honeywell continues to mandate a "collaborative" and "team-building" environment and will not be considering remote work in lieu of a physical move.

He went on to pay lip service to the notion of "retaining top talent," paying no mind whatsoever to the fact that most "top talent" will not work for a company that (a) has mandated a "move with us or resign and get nothing" policy, and (b) insists on living in the dark ages by not allowing its employees to continue working from home once COVID restrictions are lifted.

Many of us have spouses, children, and elderly parents whose lives would be profoundly impacted by the upheaval of relocation. This proves that Corporate only cares about their bottom line and it is not only dehumanizing but downright heartless. I for one am disgusted that they're allowed to get away with this.

I worked at AlliedSignal (and was laid off, with a package) about a year before they merged with Honeywell. AlliedSignal always had the mentality that if someone in upper management "sneezed" they would initiate a layoff of certain divisions. I was always wondering how much better upper management would be at Honeywell. Well, now I know. I'm so sorry and saddened to learn that a well known company like Honeywell is actually so much worse than AlliedSignal.

Also note that people with kids were suddenly thrown into a situation where they had to entertain their kids, home school, or keep up with changing school requirements during business hours.

The point I believe @sre was making is that this particular practice - that of an office move and forced relocation - has been around for decades and is not another unique form of torture conjured up by DaresUs and his cronies. This would make it difficult to take legal action because it is an accepted business practice.

Naturally they are expecting to lose a percentage of the employees tagged for relocation, but Houston has a large pool of qualified potential employees.

Well the real estate taxes and rents should be cheaper.
Try and find a property not in a flood plain if that is even possible.
Plan on getting a shootin' iron.

Typical Honeywell shady practice..
No guarantee they will keep you even a year if you accept the job. If you have too, take it...and look for something else in TX....lot of jobs there....

If it were me, I'd find a NJ labor lawyer and investigate getting severance as a case of "constructive discharge." It might be a stretch, but maybe not during a pandemic. H lawyers are very good at skating close to the edge, but I wouldn't put it past them to try this on for size to see what they can get away with.

There is no cost saving logic to this move. Around 50 people got relo letters. The move to NC was rejected last year as lower pay was not worth the loss of talent. The worst part is that most of these 50 people exceeded their bonus target, many were promoted and shockingly even the relo letter states confidence in employee ability to make valuable contributions

Cost of living is significantly lower in houston. Did honeywell mention the 20 percent pay cut they would be taking? Those salary reductions are factoried into the transitions green sheet

Just a prelude to divesting Advanced Materials (AM), now the majority of people left in Morris Plains, and keeping the other parts of PMT, namely HPS and UOP, now neatly headquartered in Houston.

Assuming the move is to escape the taxation and other costs of operating in NJ, there will still be extra costs if paying employees in NJ from a base of operations in TX. And we know how willing the company is to incur extra costs to retain top talent.

Yeah but it's no longer the 80s. Remote work should be an option. Most of the positions that are moving can readily and efficiently be performed exclusively from home, as they were during the pandemic, which would result in cost savings to the company.

While I feel bad for those affected, it is a common practice for companies rearranging themselves to say, "Your position is moving to XYZ. If you decide not to move with it, you will no longer be employed with us." Happened to me in the '80s in another industry. At least these jobs are not leaving the US.

CEO of PMT came from UOP and we know the extent of the lay-offs there.

And from what I heard, he stayed in Des Plaines even if PMT HQ is in MP. Why the double standard?

When they moved corporate HQ to Charlotte people found out about it on the news because apparently someone leaked it to the media before leadership could address the employees. Same situation, people were given the "choice" of moving there or not having a job with Honeywell anymore. I do not know how these decision makers sleep at night knowing they are destroying peoples lives.
