Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

HR - Be Careful

I do not want to go into much detail as it relates to two cases where I had to deal with HR but I wanted to say a few things:

  • always be cautious when dealing with HR
  • they are here to make company operate efficiently and according to the law
  • they are not here to make your life easier and to advocate for you
  • when communicating, they use purposefuly vague language to avoid responsibility
  • more often than not you will not get answers you need
  • they are ok when dealing with small straigthforward stuff, they choke on anything more complex and chose not to act
  • their logic is doing nothing is better than doing something and being responsible for it later on
  • observe how they behave when on premise (this is hard now due to Covid though) - how much time they spend behind closed doors with managers and up

I am sure I am missing other important things, this is what comes to mind right now - feel free to pile on

A few years back, the HR department got a dose of their own meds. A bunch of them were laid off. Karma is just around the corner if you ask me. HR and ER drones visiting this site, remember this, Nike is a company, you are a number in it and you can have fun doing what you do - won’t be that fun when the shoe is on the foot. Those managers
, directors and VPs have you doing their dirty jobs at the chopping block, we all know that. Between COVID, economic recession, consumer sentiments, death of retail, your fates too could be sooner than later. Not to say all HR/ER is monstrous but for worker bees everywhere, beware - these are not your BFFs.

All HR department administration employees at all companies are all about promoting themselves with no concern for the rank and file. They do this by promoting the company and proving how they are saving money and why they are so valuable. It is al about looking good for themselves, NEVER TRUST HR but you still must play the game and kiss their butts. Stay safe if you can.

HR is there to protect senior management, and the company. Correct, they are not there “for you” unless you are senior management.

Obviously hr is not for the employee. That's why unions exist.

@2eyd, it has less to do with Nike hr and more to do with what hr is as a function. You'd have to be clueless to think any hr team at any company is for your benefit as an employee

@ 2lvo

Before you jump up and down, the comment is letting you know the HR function primary function is to defend and protect Nike and their management function, they are not a resource FOR you as an individual, or as is expected.

When the rubber meets the road you will find which side they are on - clear for you I hope..,

@2ycn, was that meant to draw support of sympathy for HR? Remember, HR, in fact, in the ONLY function that can do something positive and lead the change from the front. Stop and think for a second.

HR used to be a well organized function until it stopped being authentic and preached a ‘do what we say’ not ‘what we do attitude’. Poor leaders with v public poor performances yet no action taken. Instead a flock of followers creating an even bigger mess who have zero passion for the brand or sport. The business needs to be ‘diverse’ says the entire female leadership! Talent needs to be rewarded ....says the leadership who cherry pick preferred ‘best mates’ candidates.
What’s happening now isn’t HRs fault ....they are just as much a victim as any other Dept, that also needs a good clear out. HR is just as frustrated and tired of CDA. HR are also employees with families to support and are watching from a front row seat the injustice from within a ‘supportive’ function that they are no longer motivated to represent.

HR is about following gov and internal rules, compliance etc. They are detached from the individual

Nike/ managers resource,.....not your resource

@2hdu, we know what Nike's HR is. The argument is about what it needs to be.

HR is absolutely not meant to look out for you. They look out for the company. The naming is clever enough to fool you into not thinking you need a union to protect you. As Mark Z would say, 'dumb f—s.'

@2flu, get your head out of your a–, now. Divisive? No, we are calling for fair treatment, equality, transparency, and a bit of humanity when dealing with the employees. Who is looking out for the employees? HR is meant to be doing that. It is called "HUMANN RESOURCES" for a reason.

“ Clearly, you are one of THEM” - that is toxic and naive unless “THEM” is in reference to an employee. Ridiculous. Stop being so divisive, HR is not “to blame”.

@2svq, No...they are not doing THEIR job - not one bit. Clearly, you are one of THEM hence the defensive attitude. You need to understand that to truly empathize with workers situation you must believe them as they see it not how you imagines their experiences to be like. Paraphrasing Brene Brown here not that would know a thing about that.

Omg. Seriously, people?! HR has a job and they do it. They’re not here to a nanny Nike workers. If you want to be angry about the changes you’re seeing then look at leadership, not HR. They’re doing their job just like everyone else is trying to do! Ffs.

Funny thing about HR is that they don't care about Humans and they aren't very Resoureful.

On a site note: More S bands per capita in HR than any other function. That is a true stat.

Agreed. It used to be different. HRBP has lost its BP. Some of the good ones have been let go. It feels like people are constantly scanned for risk now vs. support to "lead, coach, drive and inspire" your team. That used to be ER's role....now it feels like that is all that HR does. Still a few great people around but dwindling.
