Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Inconsistencies

Some of colleagues have been given a heads up by their manager that a package is coming and they should start looking for a new job before they officially get let go. However, some of my other colleagues (in the exact same jobs) are being told "there is literally nothing to worry about". I can't help but to think they are flat out being lied to. Either way, it seems that there's a major inconsistency in the way managers are going about it. It's as if some managers are just sticking to the script that the higher ups gave them and others are showing a little compassion by giving their direct reports a tap on the shoulder so they can start looking for new jobs now.

@1ues Excluding a possible exception from WARN, if the number of emps to be laid off is 1/3 of the total workforce (Employees only), no notice is required.

Won't the WARN act be in effect, meaning they have to give 60 days notice given the likely number of people being laid off?

A lot of people are working from the home so I can’t figure
Out that will work with the turnstile not working.

We won't know until we get there. EM is known for shocking people. We can only speculate for now. The wise do update their resumes and linkedin profile though.

Why Nov 2? Is that the official date?

40% of badges won’t work on Nov 2 so don’t tailgate too closely through turnstile

The supervisor is told they will not get credit for "creating efficiency" via headcount reduction if the targeted staff resigns before laid off. Then, there's not enough time to scramble and find another target in time. Supervisors are looking after their own @$$ because they will get the axe if they are not "onboard" with "cutting costs" and "creating efficiencies"

Seriously? A senior management says everything will be fine? Anyone with a shred of business common sense knows the company is in terrible shape and has no easy way out. She’s either lying outright to you, or that exactly explains how the company got here: clueless senior managements!

Management were informed the real plan, told to say "don't worry, all fine" to employees. Good ones will share the truth with their subordinates, bad ones will act per the plan.

Meanwhile, the huge wave of airstrike layoff is boiling secretly before reaching the shore on D-Day.
Just a strategy to strike effectively, need the targeted victims to stay where they are, hit, move, report number of casualties. Doesn't that look good on their performance assessment? Executing plan and strategy effectively with solid results. All plans and resources go to waste if any drastic movement before the strike.

I was told that people that are lower performers but survived this year have been given heads up at my site to either have a huge improvement or start looking for jobs. Allegedly they have identified the people they think are most at risk

So what happens after you are laid off. Do you get any lump sum option from your vested pension to tie you over? And what about the 401 k. How do you get access to your account? Will they give US a contact number to call to get the information. What about any unfinished work items? Ie. Expense reports?

Talked to a senior manager with 40 years of experience who kept telling me everything would be fine. Then the EU layoff numbers were released and she was shocked and said everyone should be prepared to be laid off unless you’re DW.

When anybody in a large organisation says do not worry , that should be a signal to worry because most managers say that to create calm before the impending carnage. Best of luck but don’t trust anyone in management.

Package may refer to severance and/or retirement. While there is a lot of inconsistency it is likely only VP’s really know. In the UK as the info was pushed down each subsequent mgt layer had to sign NDA’s. The company was frustrated by leaks on the 401. That said there still likely are leaks and some VP’s in the upstream have not given consistent leading indicators. As we get closer rumors will run wild and we may also be taken advantage of by non EM posts. Not that the OP is non EM. He/she is right. There are huge inconsistencies just like when we were called to campus earlier this year. I think at this point it seems likely we will hear by early nov but then leaks may force them to announce early just as the 401 situation unfolded. It was amazing they apologized for the leak and us finding out that way but of course not about the 401 cut itself. I honestly dont care about that, just that my 401 was cut! And likewise whether I will have a job. Not sure but maybe supervisors have been told to make cut lists? If so they would have signed NDA’s or are going thru a paper exercise directed by PM’s or VP’s that actually don’t know.
