Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Why are people being put on a PIP right now?

A friend of mine was put on a PIP a couple of weeks ago. Even if we put aside the fact that he is one of the best and most valuable employees here, it still remains that they're putting people on a PIP in the middle of a pandemic. Are no allowances given for the f—ed up situation all of us are in right now? How can anybody add that kind of stressing on a person when we are all already over-stressed???

Was he put on a PIP or a BPIP? People are getting put on Bench PIPs left and right because of utilization. Sellers aren't selling, so the non-sellers pay the price for no utilization and get cut.

Cheap way of reducing headcount. He will go and I bet his position does not get filled by a new hire. If backfilled then somewhere down the line a job position has gone from the org chart or soon will.

Ultimately it’s the decision by his/her immediate line manager. Perhaps they have upset the manager a few years ago and the issue has resurfaced.
Retaliatory PIPs by the manager do happen. HR will not step in and manage the process, line management have gotten to know this over the years and quite frankly abuse the system for their own ends.
Maybe a colleague has “white anted” your friend and is in cahoots with line management to retaliate. (Look up white anting).
Yes this does go on more than you think in IBM.

Why? Because IBM's financial engineering lives on... IBM will never be a growth company anymore.
IBM needs to keep costs in check quarter to quarter... the divestiture of part of GTS is just another ploy to make the accounting murky for a while and confuse the WS analysts trying to make them believe growth will return!
