Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Can you keep Severance if you have a new job?

I'm about to be terminated from IBM. I'll get 1 month severance & benefits (gee thanks). If I start a new job during that month, do I still get the severance?

Noting that Severance is classically paid out (often just allocated to last paycheck) the last day or two of your formal employment. So you hit that and you've got it all.

They wait in part because they want you to find a job and resign for the new job .... which you don't have to in practice.

These are some non-conflicting but confusing posts.

IBM keeps you on for 60 days (or whatever). Do not resign during that time and do not tell them about a new job and you'll be fine. In general you can work multiple jobs but wouldn't surprise me if IBM would consider that voluntary resignation. Not that they should - but safer to not tell. And that may be easy if there are no expectations of you then badge in at lunch on occasion from your new job. If the locals ( your manger or his manager or vengeful) care then "job abandonment" could come into play - so seek out discretely how that might work out as soon as notified).

Money past the "still technically employed 60" is yours. Classically known as Severance (part of the package but not all). As others noted you can start day one after the "formal employment" ends (the 60 days or so) and keep the severance as they let you go and you didn't resign or knowingly to others abandon your job during the 60 days.

Yes you can. I did that in June this year,. Joined another company a week after getting cut. Got 3 months severance from. IBM and sign-on bonus from the new company.

DONT TELL ANYONE. Not even your closest buddy at your old place of work. Since most jobs are remote, no one will know.

IBM has never paid FMV wage even in shanty town so most have had 2-3 jobs to get by.
The shady hotels were packed with IBMers because nobody could afford an apartment.
Ethical? give me a break

You can’t start your new job until the day after your final day at IBM.
Only one month severance? Usually it is 3 months.
