Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Is the company even thinking long term?

I just read an article in which the company is described as desperate looking for a short-term market win and author’s main argument was ATT selling DTV.
Doubt if this company has any long term vision at all. How really desperate we are?

Here is the article: https://seekingalpha.com/article/4379690-t-needs-to-be-less-desperate

It really is sad because Bell Labs was creating so much for so long with a new patent every month or so in a ridiculous fashion! Don’t know where or why ingenuity seems to have dried up and T has become a follower instead of an innovator! ATT needs to get back to basics and stop trying to become something they’re not by buying their position in the market place!

Sometimes I wonder, with all the poor decision making of late, if the company is simply trying to steer the ship into the iceberg on purpose. ( Read that: Bankruptcy )

Nah. Innovation, R&D or even the slightest effort of thinking long term is a threat for leadership.

They're just worried about next quarter, and the next one and so on.

AT&T so comfortable with its spectrum. This company is nothing about innovation or new tech whatsoever.

This is what happens when the so called leadership listens to the outside consultants instead of investing in your employees and R&D. Ship's sailed and resembles a cruise ship with failed engines in the middle of the ocean.
Employee career development? Zero.
Constant threats to complete the useless corp training or get dinged in the performance appraisal? 10000
Watching friends and colleagues get thrown out and those jobs/functions immediately reappear overseas? 100000

Oh, but give us your best ideas for new products and watch how we tell you this will be the best company.

Honestly, they have tried a number of products and services, but most of them didn’t pan out as they thought it should. They couldn’t decide whether the focus was on the end user (directv/digital life etc.) or business to business ( time warner purchase/advertising/ etc ) but all of these moves has put att in a bad spot. The core (wireless) is ok, but honestly it’s only a matter of time until major changes will come.

Its difficult to think of long term when a company shuts down its innovation programs ( foundry, tip etc..). There is no plan to be relevant in the future.

The id–ts that run this company have no long-term vision at all. They are the worst leadership team at a major US corporation. Every long-term plan they have put in place for the last 15+ years have been a major failure.

Apparently this phenomenal success has been overlooked by the stock market. Ooops! stock $26.80

HE DID NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT DirecTV which is going directly into the trash.

BUT THE MOST MEMORABLE LINE FROM TODAY's CALL"

“Now we just need to execute and get the right product in front of the customer that ultimately drives…” Stankey said:

Well WTF do you think all the Warners people have been doing all these years. You’re talking about creativity, lightning in a bottle, alchemy…not widgets. You destroy most of the magic-making and then say you just need to get the right “product” to the “customer.”
