Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Referred to as “old dogs” by senior management

A bunch of us were in a meeting with two members of senior management. At one point, one of them said, “Old dogs CAN learn new tricks.”

This person was referring to us learning new IT skills, but what all of us heard was naked age discrimination.

Apparently you can be taught to be a whiny and self-entitled like the little kids.

There are man 60+ who got hired at BNYM but they are friends of top management. Age discrimination happens only when you are not a friend of your manager at BNYM.

For 25 years new tech backfills have largely been hot recent grad go getters who flame out and are gone “one (project) and done and on to the next employer”. It’s ok for vague soft skilled leaders in Sr Mgt to jump every few years, but not for hard technical skills... that one project wonder model fails every time.

Sack all of the old dogs, just go ahead... we welcome it. You truly have no idea what you’re breaking. There are still many of us who could move back into those slots but wouldn’t without a doubling of salary. Why wouldn’t we demand that ... we absolutely offer tenfold the value.

Ignorance is bliss.

I got laid off at 63. After I was gone a senior manager said about me they needed staff who could keep up with new skills. This was despite the fact I learned new skills and trained younger staff. When I heard about this I consulted an attorney since I had witnesses to this but let it go because of the consequences of a lawsuit.

Lord, you people. Stop acting like you know what’s going on with layoffs or policy and just do the job. Do the job and you won’t get fired. Try it

No surprise to us old dogs.... Just do it. A word of advice... hire 3 millennials for every displaced 60+ year old and hope to god that one pans out to mediocrity.

Not surprised. Next round of layoff is targeted those over 55 in our group.
