Ford charges Suppliers up front for Warranty Costs

Why would any company supply Ford Motor? Detroit News article shares that 2/3 of warranty cost is design related and supply base is made to be the scapegoat again. Sweep penalties up front and supplier may get some funds back if they react quickly. Ford only needs to look in the mirror for the Explorer launch to seem where the issue lies. They will have another look at the mirror for the F-150.

I worked at Ford (Contractor) as a warranty Engineer. Ford can not and will not control and enforce the dealerships charging excessive warranty costs back to Ford. Even if they did, most of the warranty claims are written so poorly, (gibberish) that Ford Engineering can not find the root cause on most of the issues. Mid Management only interested in spending (wasting) most of the time in
meetings (and dragging us warranty guys in) just so they would "appear good" for the next couple of weeks. It was like this month after month. 100's of millions of dollars lost, month after month.

Almost everyone at the working level knew no prototypes would mean lots of issues. It would have been straight forward to present long lists of issues caught during the prototype process from past programs but senior managers did not want to make waves.

Career over company!

There are factors that are difficult to control that are difficult/impossible to model in CAE. There was an LL6 in Quality that volunteered to map out every single problem area. He didn't have his management's support and ended out being a victim of 2019 SRD.

When our previous CEO decided to cut costs by reducing prototypes and rely more on CAE the issues became more pronounced, unfortunately in production. These are problems that should have been discovered and fixed much earlier in the product development cycle. Looking at all the warranty cost I sure it would been cheaper in the long run to keep building prototypes for development and testing.

This is going to be a total cluster f@%k.

GM uses many of the exact same suppliers as Ford, so why are the Ford warrany costs higher? Hint, it isn't entirely the suppliers that are at fault.

Why don't we just pay less for the parts knowing that this will happen.
Why? Because it does keep happening.
Interesting cycle.
