Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Looks good on a resume

I left Cisco a few months ago for a smaller company. I have to say that my interviewer was more impressed that I had Cisco on my resume than he was with my qualifications. He even admitted as such to me. I have to hand it to Cisco. Although it’s a terrible company to work for - it sure looked good on paper.

Everyone in RTP is aware of Cisco. It's one of the larger employers in the area. Outside of SJC and RTP in the US, you'll probably be asked SYSCO or CISCO?

When I visit family, their friends always immediately think of SYSCO, so I tell them Linksys.

±+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Cisco don't own Linksys anymore, they sold it to Belkin in 2010 ( or some where around that time/year ).

Uh I'm sheltered from the caste discrimination cause I'm not from a third world country...

No, you're naive. Just because you're not from a third world country doesn't mean that the managers, directors, V.P.'s and higher who ARE from a third world country don't apply/follow the customs that they were raised under.

There are MANY teams at Cisco, even in the U.S., that are heavily led by Indians and are heavily weighted towards Indian workers. I've seen where lower level work was transitioned to India, and then more work followed which necessitated management/leadership in India which sped up the transition of more and more of that team/function/BU to India and then the U.S. hiring of workers to replace people lost through attrition or LR's were replaced by Indians in the U.S.

Even in the U.S., we have the saying "It's not what you know, but who you know, that gets you the job." It happens everywhere, so I'm not knocking India as I don't have enough experience/knowledge to say if I've witnessed caste discrimination or would even recognize it if I saw it. But their preference to hire their own, just like our preference to hire Americans, means you're impacted by them.

As a new grad, you are looked at as cheap and obedient labor. You are sheltered from the cutthroat politics, outsourcing, and caste discrimination. New grads are not even hired with a defined role or responsibilities.

im a new grad of the last few years who recently took an external position. i got interviews at a number of places and working at Cisco definitely seemed to help. That being said, if you've been there for 10-15 years and apply elsewhere, it might give a different impression. I dont think Cisco is as bad as some here make it out to be, they're just disgruntled. Plenty of former Cisco folks working at FAANG or atleast better shops than here.

Cisco is still well respected out there. I know most people from internal of Cisco (I am a partner) are usually quite skilled that I have dealt with. I know if a technical guy can configure a Cisco device and understand what they doing, they can get their head around any other vendor.

You can't blame staff for lack of direction at the board level.

Just save most of your money while at Cisco and invest your money. Then you don't need the big BS, big paying replacement post ER/LR job.

If you can survive a decade or so, and are a somewhat wise and knowledgeable investor, you will have enough to work because you want to work; not because you have to.

It amazes me how people spent their salary like there was no tomorrow, spent 15+ years at Cisco; and (just now) took the package, and are now freaking because they need yet another big-bucks replacement job. Good luck.

These are some of my current neighbors.

Worked Cisco 17 years, LR'd. Took a job making half the Cisco money with a third of the stress. Super limited BS, work politics, and no high-maintenance upper management. Could not be happier.

Either this post is out right sarcasm and troll or the person really went from one stinking gutter to another. If this is not true, then the recruiter was to blame and ignorant. It is fun to see such posts, it is hard to argue with someone who is so foolish who cannot even realize how foolish he or she is.

My vote is out right sarcasm.

But the OP did say "small company", so maybe they're impressed by the (now tarnished) name brand. Also, the OP said interviewer, not recruiter.

I interviewed w/ a company in RTP that makes a hardware/software package that competes w/ Telepresence. My interview was in a conf room just off the main lobby outside their controlled area and it took half my allotted interview time for the HR person to get connected to the Interviewer. First it was no audio, then audio, but very choppy video, back to no audio AND choppy video and finally working. Not a great first impression.

Then, I'm told that I have to be in the office every morning at 8AM for a scrum call with the other half of the team in Switzerland for a video conf call. I ask how people handle the rush hour traffic because they're located off an expressway with frequent accidents. Do they come in early or can they take the call from home and come in after rush hour? I'm told they're a strict 8-5 shop and you can't come in early, that lunch has to be either 11 - 12 or 12 - 1, and you can't skip it/eat at your desk and leave at 4. Their reasoning? It makes for better work/life balance to force several hundred people to all have to hang out in a parking lot for however long it takes them to get there early enough to not be late if there's an accident on the freeway and everyone queue up to get in the building and "clock in" without being late.

Then I interviewed w/ a small company just being bought out by a much larger company. The chaos of transitioning from lax "policies" and little-to-no documented processes to a strict policy driven company was mind blowing.

Those interviews made me miss the days of working at Cisco.
