Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Communicators - what’s the script?

Can communicators on the board please share what the talking points are when we get laid off? Just trying to be mentally prepared on what to expect.

This was what I was given to let my employees go...

"you are the bottom of the remaining employees. I'm sorry, but your are not the employee we want to keep around. Search for work else where. Thanks! And good bye!"

@1tvo+186yJSu6 Good luck with the “job placement”. Unless your someone that became too complacent, out of the game and need to know how to format a resume it won’t do much for you.

Like the rose ceremony in the Bachelor/ette or any other reality Tv elimination.
Dehumanizing and undignified.

From my point of view there is little value in receiving an explanation as some seem to want. We all know what it is. I’ll be most interested in discussing the assistance for job placement so I can get started right away.

Watch Stanley Tucci get fired on “Margin Call”. Pretty much the exact script they will be using.

Immediately after the communication.

  • Collect email addresses and phone numbers for key players (especially your Admin if still around).
  • Communicate with your admin / supervisor/ communicator your external Email address - and inform you will send a test email from this address for passing removal from their external garbage pile.

If they know how to do that.

  • Admin (if still around) will try to help with questions. Others generally will not - likely a canned response.
  • Determine who amongst your associates will be supportive down the road. Confirm this with them and collect contact information (external). The Layoff board won't be a support element.
  • Utilize every resource available - whether your 60-day or Garden slotted. Set up accounts on all relevant EM websites that are 'external'.
  • If provided a contracted 'Layoff' contact outside the company - be friendly and contact them regularly with even trivial questions. Remember these external contacts are in an awkward role supporting a corrupt system. they are more blind-sided than you and have 10-20 more of you to support.
  • Move on ever more.

As posted elsewhere, I was to be a Communicator, but explicitly requested not to be after the prep session. What that means for my future? Really could NOT care less. I have another job in progress for 1Q21 which will return me to my engineering interests. Out of human resource balancing acts.

All that said -
It will be short and basically scripted.
My recommendation - as stated by others - is to be polite and ask questions.
Not saying 'genial' and 'Mary Xmas' - peace is not out.

But if the opportunity presents itself, if there is a brief pause in the conversation.
An awkward silence.
Let that hang out there for as long as possible.
Until the Communicator says 'Well....'
Then simply hang up.

I was told Exxon is a competitive place and I didn't make the cut of being excellent... blah blah blah... btw, you have one week to sign the paperwork and you must leave by X date. no empathy whatsoever and not even a thank you for all that I have done for the company. Even a simple "thank you" would make me feel much better.

This isn't about office politics or professional work, it's being a kind human.

Will they be recording the zoom sessions? As dumb as this sounds I wonder if I should get dressed up, while WFH, in order to not look like a slob on tape for whoever may watch in the future.

My supervisor wouldn’t even look me in the eye to tell me I was PIPed. Just a phone call. The answer to every question was the same - the decision was made. Also, she couldn’t even articulate what the PIP would entail. No preparation, no reasoning, zero care.
What an awful organization it is that treats any employee with complete disregard and disrespect.

Terminators pretending to care?
The message is short and dispassionate.
More importantly has no information or questions answered.
You’re axed, here is the HR pack, bye Felicia, and thank you for helping Grandma’s dividend.

@fye - a very similar story for me: including the great feedback from KO’s, pat on the head from my boss and the bombshell “NSI” ranking in July (some 2 months later). It sounds like even the tone deaf, robotic smirk was pretty much the same.

I wonder if it’s a requirement for supervisors to have no ability to show empathy, or if they have a chip implanted to achieve the same effect?

PIP communications were harsher than layoff communications will be. While the layoff message may still feel cruel, a pleasant reply back will set communicator at ease and you won’t be blacklisted from a return in the future. Sure many on this board say they wouldn’t return, but harsh reality is it is a good job, although within an old management structure.
I was laid off years ago, left scared but polite. Job fitting my skills came open 5 years after merger and I came back, this time knowing exactly what I was coming back too. Much easier second time.

I got booted out in July. It was quick, cold and brutal. A Zoom meeting with video saying well you are always getting good feedback from your customers, well appreciated, but you were ranked in bottom and you have 21 days to decide PIP or PIL, good bye. My lady supervisor had a smirk on her face. No sorry, no apologies, no explanation why I got excellent feedback and rave reviews from knowledgeable others only a month or 2 ago and then all of a sudden this unexpectedly. I was stunned, shocked and speechless. When I asked if I can transfer to another site where the supervisor knew me and really thought highly of me, my supervisor coldly said that would be impossible, since I am ranked low, I cannot be transferred anywhere. In 2 weeks I selected the 3 month pay option, quit immediately, took a month off, found a new job and I am much happier. Got 2 months double pay. Currently making overall 10% less money but far more relaxed and happier. So to answer your question - it is cold, brief, cruel and with no conscience. No different from Nazi German concentration camps. Look for a new job and get the hell out from this vicious evil group of sadistic managers.
