Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Who would walk for a 6 months severance package???

I certainly would !!

Those folks in the UK are getting a sweet deal. I don't want to hear any cry babies.

Give me that and I am gone.

Cry babies? That is a debatable statement.
I am not sure you realise there's more emerged land than just the great (no irony) USoA out there and that unfortunately in some countries (like the one I live in) real unemployment rates are in the double digits also for skilled IT people (and that number is in the high double digits for people over 50).
So unless you have a strong financial position and can accept the risk of not finding a new job and somehow manage to get to your pension age, in this recessive economy there are people that are going to be thrown into poorness also with a 6 month package.

"...The management think you are key .." or they let you believe it. Think !

This kind of dangerous cat-and-mouse game could reveal to the management also mutants rats.

The voluntary offer is at management discretion which is the worst part. So you may opt for it but if management thinks you are key for them then they won’t give you the 6 month offer. So if you want to leave then you will just have to resign with normal pay terms.

So voluntary offer is just a tactic for management to play with and get rid of those people they want to. Employees get screwed either way.

I would sign up in a heart beat. Beats the normal 3 months severance IBM usually gives you for forced layoff, and they are eventually going to lay me off anyway.

Plus first 30k should be tax free so should equate to more than 6 months pay.

Even if companies might be hiring, job market is most competitive right now and getting the offer is very difficult.
Only amazon might hire you because they have high turnover.

Those young people might have job in hand or they're rich or they are stupid because with ibms peanut salary, it doesn't make much difference

It’s actually 6 months + your notice period (usually 3 months). I know even young people who have signed up.

Why don't you guys leave tf outta here after 6 months anyway if you're so eager to walk just for 6 months pay?

Everyone comes here and write stupid sh– but no one would do actually do it.

You have to feel a bit for the IBMers in UK kicked out mid-2020 on the UK Statutory Minimum rate.

Made redundant in September 2020. Given UK government statutory minimum redundancy payment. IBM must have known another lay off program was on the cards soon after and they offer something better, seems unfair but you know what ? They do not value their employees whatsoever.
Doesn't matter if you re-train in new strategic areas and apply for a new position, you are 'black listed', no chance of staying in IBM.
My job was not made redundant, I was, the job tasks were given to some one else to do.

It is a gamble. What is the economy going to look like in a few months? What if you are considered 'obsolete' and can't find anything for months and months or even a year? What if you refuse the severance package and your employer lays you off anyways? It may seem tempting now but maybe not so in a few months...

And where you go and what do you do ? in this context ? This seems to me advertising by HR - to be not excluded someone of them is here - they have to reach their targets. But, if you are really sure, take it, and good luck.
