Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

In Colin Powell’s words - Don’t let your job define you...

“Don't let your ego get too close to your position, so that if your position gets shot down, your ego doesn't go with it.”

  • Colin Powell

In Powell’s autobiography he mentions a time when he almost lost his career from a bad performance review. This happened when he was very high ranking at the time. The cause was politics. What happened is that he shared an opinion with his boss that made the boss angry. What saved him was someone who worked with Powell previously seeing the report and validating him.

Our jobs are just jobs. It’s best not to let it become more than that.

This is what’s a bit sickening about the modern corp culture everyone picked up from Silicone Valley.

Not that it wasn’t already there but the last decade it became so extreme.

“Ask yourself, what would a shareholder do?”

One of my original mentors (from way back) expressed it this way :

You can love the job, but the job can’t love you back.

Give it all you got and leave it at that.
