REPORT: TECH GIANT CISCO ABOUT TO LAY OFF 14,000

California Business Journal
Friday, Jan 1, 2021
While the company has not officially confirmed the news, reports out of Silicon Valley suggest that tech giant Cisco Systems is preparing to shed 14,000 workers from its payroll.
If true, it would represent the second largest in a string of large scale layoffs announced in tech sector since January 2015.
The Cisco cuts would the largest tech-sector job cut of the year

Why can't Cisco just copy AWS just like MS and Alibaba did? Then we would have Cisco Cloud which if priced below AWS/Azure/Baba, would be able to win over customers.

Cisco products are no longer relevant and will have half the headcount in 3 years or less to have any chance to survive

Frankly speaking, LR or layoff is part of the Cisco DNA. It happened to IBM and HP in the past and now. Cisco has too many non-performing products and teams and many used-to-be selling well legacy gears have 2 digit decline in revenue. Many recent acquisition is not that successful. I came across a AI/Machine-Learning people who tries to analyze Cisco data to find out how to push up the revenue. There is no need to analyze those data because we engineers all know what is the issue and we can't easily fix it with our current talent pool. Therefore, we need to keep buying startup but most of the engineers there are not loyal and have no incentive to build the next big thing. Therefore, Cisco only acquires the old or current technology but not the future ones. Recommend Cisco to rebuild itself, accelerate the movement of legacy products to India, layoff the engineers with old skills, hire good talents from outside with pay like FAANG company. Layoff 14K is not enough. Should clean up at least 50% of the workforce and rehire 15K good talents in next 5 years.

Yeah there's one persone who has a beef with IOT team and spams all topics about IOT being useless.

But this is a case with all overlays.
Each architecture overlay has a technology quota.
Not just IoT.

Cisco no longer can pay double commission for IOT overlay sales team that just put their name on orders and get paid commission off the backs of the AM's and SE's that actually work with customers

Agreed, I don’t generally understand why sales overlay would be at risk (although I get the IoT part). Their skill set is specialized and necessary. Why wouldn’t GVS or another more ‘generalist’ sales team be more at risk? Their function that could more be easily outsourced (not to mention selling to IT teams that are largely from one region anyways..). Lots of extra middle sales managers, too.

Out of curiosity: why is IoT overlay so hated here? From my perspective as SE they don't differ from other overlays.

@4miz+18H7q2le Won't be surprised if that happens. Some of those "specialist teams" are useless. I have seen multiple "internal" presentations by SDA and SD-WAN specialist teams who still talk about asymmetric routing (AR) as something that is horrendous in industry, being blissfully oblivious of the fact that AR is a reality in enterprise space and has been for the last 10+ years at least. Less than 13% customers who bought a DNA-C ever actually implemented SDA and whoever did had immense issues - every SDA implementation is a CAP call and cluster-f@(k. There is no point in keeping some of these teams as not only they don't generate any business but because they are tied to a specific product/solution, they sometimes bad mouth another Cisco product with overlapping functionality to customers. I have seen this with my own eyes and heard with my own ears.

I agree that as long as we sell ACI, the DC Specialist teams should be around. Rest are just seat warmers.

This is obviously a fake article. Cisco is not laying off 14,000 employees.

Cisco Employee Strategy

  1. Layoff 1,500 full-time employees in the USA
  2. Rehire through temp agencies or outsource to India
  3. Layoff 1,500 full-time employees in the USA
  4. Rehire through temp agencies or outsource to India
  5. Sell 2 office buildings in California

The above has been happening for 12 years in San Jose.

Can you share about the downsizing of the sales org creating a further 3600 in cuts (mentioned below)? No mention by GVS manager in RTP.

It has to be below just 20 on any site not to trigger the consultation process there. And history dictates that the US is first, as little regulatory process/delays and Europe/ROW to follow after. The emails therefore likely to be at least a couple of weeks after US process, and likely longer.

If the Feb 2021 layoff rumours are true then in UK we should expect the serial psycho "consultation emails" from DM soon unless he keeps the number down at all the sites so as not to have to send the emails. In addition to Covid, in UK, they now have Brexit as an excuse.

Prior post is accurate although hearing Feb 2021 layoff will be in excess of 3600 due to downsizing of sales org

The layoffs are scheduled in Feb 2021 as stated in the first announcement in August 2020 . ( 3200 additional new LRs. )
Here are the numbers that HR shared and was talking about. if you were a manager you know these to be part of the strategy
early retirement in Sept 3760 ( or 33% took the package)
October 7900 LRd across the US and then later in Europe/Australia
December 150 in San Jose
February another 3,200-3,600 are being identified
In July they will revisit the numbers after the Covid vaccine and closing down some non-performing areas. This was not hidden among management early on but was openly discussed. The numbers may have changed but this is all part of the $1Billion cost-cutting strategy. So if you hate the LR train Cisco may not be the best place to land.
