Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

After all the cost cutting pains do we still have wasteful Expats?

With so many good colleagues sacrificed, I wonder if we still have many expats in US, UK, Europe, Singapore etc. draining company wealth while on a long paid family vacations? How should the corporation deal with greedy expats in the next round of layoffs??

Those who justify their extravagance and claim to be providing value, please stop lying to yourself. Most employees are not providing any tangible value to the corporation.

Expat should be a mid-higher level manager opportunity only. I've seen first year supers make expat like wtf?

There are too many expats here in Singapore, draining the resources. From a human resource standpoint, extremely demoralising for local managers with so much experience, constantly pushed back by global that SG does not have the expertise. Once they return to home country, payroll will drop significantly here, morale goes up with more motivated managers. If you don't try, you never know!

In Canada, we have several ex-pats that are completely and absolutely unnecessary. They keep a distance from the local staff and consider themselves highly superior with higher skills and competencies. In reality most are here to gain experience at our cost. They are non-value added expensive watchdogs for the Corporation. Starting with the CEO and CFO, there are several expats in all operating segments as well as corporate groups. Why.....

Expats, no EM does not need any U.S. oversight at multi-billion dollar investments around the world. We can just leave everything to the locals and trust their extensive knowledge and expertise. EM doesn't even need to check up on how things are going at these sites, so yes travel costs can be completely eliminated except for my training and conference perks.

After all, just going to the cafeteria every day is enough of a challenge for me. I can't imagine actually traveling to another country. Leave that to the worthless boomers.

EM needs to focus exclusively on cutting the dividend. This should be our core mission for 2021. And we want better coffee. Why can't we have an in-house Starb*cks and resume writing benefits? EM owes us that. If EM doesn't improve soon, I might even think about leaving, and that will show them!

Even prior to 2020, XOM has had too many expats and unnecessary business travel. The majority of this is unnecessary.

There is no need whatsoever to bring any to the US.

One of the main reasons I joined EM was for Expat opportunities. With those going away and benefits of accepting one being reduced time to look elsewhere for opportunities.

Expat here. I would hardly describe my assignment as a vacation. This the hardest I've ever worked and I've been employed at multiple majors and a couple independents. It's 24/7 and never stops.

"Most employees are not providing any tangible value to the corporation." ... who do you think you are?

to get back to the topic, some of the least "value adding" expats I saw were the US ones. But i still would not just go writing off expats en masse. But i see the nr of expats decreasing gradually in the last years, 2020 only added some speed to it.
