Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Has anyone went to work for Koch industries? If so is it good culture?

I have an interview coming up.

Koch bought out a company I used to work for. They are monsters! They treat employees like garbage by lying, bullying and making a work-life balance impossible.

Fine to work for - I've known a few - and the treatment is good.
They will cut resources (maybe you) at the first sign of profit losses.
Plus - they've supported opera in NYC, which is lovable.

As with EM - if you don't look too far up the chain, it's ok.
If you do look too far up, you realize you've sold your soul.

I’ve worked in the refining side of Koch, I would go back without question. I can’t speak for all their businesses and sites, but I enjoyed working there. They really encourage teamwork and management is open to challenge. You’ll have yearly performance reviews with similar buckets to what EM has now, but they don’t force a certain number per bucket. I never felt a team member was out to get me and was never surprised by a performance outcome. While they got rid of the pension for new people a few years back, they in turn contribute more to your 401k. The 401k contribution in lieu of pension is 3%(years 1-4), 4%(years 5-9) and 5%(years 10+). They also have a 6% match on top of that, so up to 11% total. Benefit of this, if you leave early, you take it all with you after you vest.

Good luck!

Thanks @dnd+18MJ6Kzm for the lead. I looked it up (Re: wikipedia):

'MBM challenges traditional American business practices, and encourages a relatively flat hierarchical structure, with the free flow of ideas between all levels of an organization. Employees are encouraged to approach their work from an entrepreneurial perspective, and be rewarded based on the value that they bring to the company, rather than only the amount of time that they spend at work' .

[However], '...this is not always the best system for organizations to implement immediately, as it puts a lot of responsibility on individual employees to make decisions on their own, and consequently be held accountable for them, and it can also be difficult for managers to adjust to their role to "coach and lead" employees rather than the broad decision-making roles they are more accustomed too.'

Wow ... MBM would be a big change for the EM that I know.

I worked at Koch Industries for 12 years before joining ExxonMobil. Each Koch company is different, but it is not the worst place to work. The company is very transactional and if they no longer need you or your business unit it/ you will eliminated quickly. The benefits will be worse and you will not have a pension. The company knows that Charles Koch is in charge. He is a strong libertarian and do not be surprised if the concept of ”Market Bases Management” comes up. I would recommend googling it. The company is focused on money making. You will not have as many distractions such as United Way and diversity groups. The organization is a lean one and expect to work hard.

It is a very direct company culture and you will need to adapt after working here. Remember this is a job and if you need one take it. Depending on the site or office (Wichita) you work at make wise real estate decisions.

This will be a sink or swim type environment. There is no employee development and managers are fired for poor performance.

I wish you the best. To the rest of you trolls, the person who posted is just trying to get some feedback and make an informed decision.

Good Luck!

Best to check with someone whose worked there before going in. You don’t want to end up in bad environment. No point in leaving a toxic place if you go into another one. Hopefully someone can help. It’s risky to reach out on LinkedIn.
