The " white box " , for which AT&T owns the software, was a few years ago, designed by an Israeli company and physically manufactured in China. Is it still manufactured in China, or have the executives woke up to the huge security exposure???? At the time, everyone ignored the risk.

White Boxes refer to generic based computing and storage devices that are able to be provisioned with any software. Most are driven with open source linux OS, and custom application software. Where the hardware is made makes no difference. Large portions of the IP routed network are controlled by these running Cisco and Juniper software. They just got the router folks out of the hardware business.
White box means unbranded equipment, so we can switch manufacturers whenever we want to get better pricing. A lot of the electronics like laptops and tablets are made by ODMs and have branding applied later. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_design_manufacturer
We install our own software on it to function how we want, but the features are all implemented in software and are abstracted away from the hardware.
