They cut contractors every year right before Christmas. Business as usual.

From the company perspective
Step 1 -advise managers to focus on documenting tasks contractors are performing and perform knowledge transfer of knowledge existing only with contractors.
Step 2 - cut pay 20% hoping some will quit on their own (4 day work week)
Step 3 - cut pay another 10% hoping more will quit on their own
Step 4 - terminate those who remain.

From contractor perspective, yes it is abusive.

Note that they will do the same to employees.
Step 1 - Ask targeted employees to leave voluntarily
Step 2 - Change employees roles hoping they will leave voluntarily
Step 3 - Terminate contractors
Step 4 - Terminate employees.

There is always some greater fool willing to step up on the employment merry go round, so this will repeat in perpetuity. Eliminate highly skilled, highly compensated employees- replace with nubes
The only way to win is to choose not to play the game.

First off, many had to work 4 days a week max since April 1st. Supposedly to keep as many contractors as possible. Salaried employees were not affected.

Then they impose a 10% cut on top of the 4 days. So a young contractor would have been better off unemployment last summer. Salaried employees were not affected.

Finally they do let us go.

There is just a word for this : ABUSE , ABUSE, ABUSE .

I am surprised the law even allows it.

I am a salaried employee. Many of us were here in the 2000's when we did the cuts from 05-09. The one thing I give Mark Fields credit for was that he let the troops know cuts were coming 3-4 months in advance. Give time to prepare yourselves. The one blogger ask HOW IS THIS NEWS? It was the way they executed it. I senior management do not have a "PAIR". According to JF Billy is a leader then lead by example and tell the troops well in advance you plan to cut vs. this last minute before the holiday BS. It makes us look like a villan especially after all those corporate BUZZ Words or sayings like Family or people come first.. Yeah.. what Einstein put those to Billy's Prompter? Man has zero credibility.. Almost ran this company into ground once before..

I know it is late to mention but I was laid off in May as agency employee. There was no PR or anything official at that time about LayOffs. I had filed a complaint against one senior full time employee in February about inappropriate behavior. I believe I was laid off under the pretext of COVID. They investigation was ended in early May. So as a contract employee you should know to keep your mouth shut and just deal with sht at this company. Bcz they do get back to you when they can.

If it weren’t for the automotive press most of this garbage would get swept under the rug. They at least have to answer for their actions through their PR weasels.

Poster Wakeup has it right. Create a plan for financial independence, the work that plan until you are financially independent. Then your stress level goes to zero and you have options.
When you are financially independent

  • Anytime you want you can quit.
  • You can be honest at work without fearing the consequences.
  • You can engineer getting a package, so Ford pays you to leave.

You youngsters don’t be foolish with your money. We have FCGs in our area in debt up to their eyeballs - car loans, motorcycle loans, house loan, student loans. Debt is bondage. If you focus and live well below your means you can pay off all your debts and save money to pay for things with cash.

I think PWH does a tremendous job uncovering the hidden problems in the auto industry. These are public companies that many shareholders and employees depend on, and if the board of directors or the executives are going to sweep countless problems under the rug and try to coast until they retire, it is up to the financial press and industry analysts to uncover them.

Like someone said before, if you need a job at any company (paycheck) more than they need you, then you better wake up. Get your finances in order, save cash and diversify your investments. If you have any debt, get it paid off ASAP. This applies to agency, PS, direct, etc. live below your means and you will never be caught off guard by a firing.
