Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Does anyone else still have contractors on their team? Don’t understand why they are getting to stay or given longer notices than employees

Absolutely not true. Exxonmobil employees absolutely know how to do the work that contractors are doing. The exxonmobil employee is giving out the work then spending the time spot checking, QC'ing the results, and aligning to the big picture. In order to do that, they absolutely need to know how to do the technical details.

If you've ever given a contractor work to roam free and report back, you will get garbage in return (hence our horrendous safety relief programs at just about every site).

This board really makes me laugh sometimes. I am going to help you out OP. Follow along please...

Exxon’s main workforce is Contractors. They do this for obvious reasons. Most of you that were let go didn’t even do actual work. You were nothing more than messengers. They have apps for that.

The Contractors are the “skilled” work who wake up daily and actually complete real, relevant tasks. Hope that helps.

Yes, me, after 7 years working with your company, I am going to be replace next year, but the unbelievable part is, they are going to fill my position with another contractor from another country. But, why not to hire one in the city or in the continent? and if it is matter of business why not hire a VP or a CEO as well. During the time in the company I did not receive any change to be hire. Therefore, I decided not to train people, just I share the basic knowledge and that's it. I did it in the beginning, great mistake, many of you were "green" engineers, but I do not know if it is a EM behavior, they wanted knowledge without share anything. Maybe I am from the old school and the phrase " man of my word" means a lot for me, in many of brightest and greatest is the opposite.

Yes, many XOM are generalists and we hire specialists, aka contractors, to do the work. This is specially true in EMIT and engineering work. Generalists eventually become supervisors and managers.

@mhg+18gMLA0u Then you jus end up in the middle management bracket rather than value add and more often than not superfluous to requirements

@hfh+18gMLA0u Sometimes you have more things to do than time to do them so you delegate.

“ I hired a consultant to do most of the leg work. I got laid off and the consultant stayed on.”

Hiring someone to do your work for you so you can supervise, and you wonder why you were laid off?

I hired a consultant to do most of the leg work. I got laid off and the consultant stayed on. Double-whammy for me. The consultant is actually expensive but my management prefers him over me. I should have selected someone who is not great at all.

Seems in the future we should have more contractors and fewer employees. Firing employees seems to be much more traumatic for all involved than firing contractors.

I was separated and my team still has a contractor employed. No unique skill set other than perfecting the art of appearing to have a unique skill set.

Agree we have skill gaps. I do find it odd that we have contractors for so long that we don’t convert to employees or utilize to train up employees. Then again hard to train someone in many cases without having them do. Many EM people could never do the work they oversee a contractor do. A failing of our system in my view.

Truth is I many cases contractors have skills those who have only worked at ExonMobil do not. Don’t let the color of a badge determine how you view the value someone adds.

We have contractors but have hard deadlines for when they have to leave. They have unique skills in our case

They are not done laying off. Contractors don’t get benefits. A lot more jobs will be shipped overseas for the next year or two.

We still have both contractors and consultants on my team. Laid off good employees though.
Employees were treated like sh-t too..as if they were trash. I am a survivor and this rubbed me the wrong way. I will be leaving as soon as another opportunity comes by.
