Nvidia Hires IBM Vet Steve Fields To Work On Data Center Systems

Dominic Daninger, vice president of engineering at Burnsville, Minn.-based Nor-Tech, an Nvidia
high-performance computing system builder partner, said the hiring of Fields reflects the
importance of the data center market to Nvidia, which is becoming increasingly vertically
integrated with its systems approach, its acquisition of Mellanox and its pending acquisition of
Arm.

POWER has no chance of increasing its meager share of the data center market.

Don't read too much into the "coming out of retirement" thing. "Retiring" from a company you've been at a long time is often a purely financial exercise that, for example, allows you access to your 401(k) with that company without penalty.

That's why you'll often see execs "retire" and then pop back up a few months later at a new gig.

Nvidia and AMD bidded for him so I bet they paid up

Power is dead, all the leaders are gone, everyone going thru the motions until they get a better job or retire, there is also the traditional spring power layoff coming up

Fields shared the job update on LinkedIn earlier this week, saying that the new opportunity at
Nvidia brought him out of retirement after ending his tenure at IBM in April.

Reading between the lines: Nvidia backed-up the the Brinks trunk.

Let’s check the highlight reels
AIX losing 20% install base per year and LINUX on power at single digit market share
Power having 8 quarters of zero or negative growth in a row
Power revenue having shrunk to 10% of its hey day
May layoffs decimate future power development
IBM fellows and developers go to competitors vs coming back to save the brand
OS/400 makes you rent or rebuy the SW stack to move to cloud violating a fundamental value promise
Does this sound like Power management knows what they are doing
Goodbye Power brand IBM has cast you aside

Losing Brad and Steve in Austin were the death nails to power. Brad is now a VP at AMD , also know as IBM south since the best and brightest moved or are moving there. Almost everyone at IBM Austin where power is developed is trying to get into to either Nvidia or AMD. The only people left are older engineers retiring with p10 or new hirers building experience as they look for new work and engineers who can not find work outside Ibm. Power10 will be the church hd of power.
