@1ulm+18gkjsOe Ford family will never allow the company to be merged. Other companies have tried to merge with Ford and failed because the family always blocks it. They would have to give up their special voting power stock and that will never happen. I think it would be the best thing for the company because Elena, Alexandra and Henry the III would all be shown the door in a heartbeat, but that's exactly why it won't happen. They are full of incompetents and know the party's over once they lose those shares.

@1gfu, it is not a question of whether electrification will displace majority of ICEs. No one is actually shooting for going complete BEV portfolios. It will be a mix of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell and traditional ICEs. Even if that takes say 30% of the share, the effect on PD for ICEs will be devastating. You will still have EcoBoosts etc, but no OEM will invest in improving them or competing on ICE strengths. All dollars will go towards electrification, connected vehicles and software-defined cars. We don't even have to debate this, as the market (stock market) has already spoken. Every little company that is coming into the market is ending sporting Ford-like market caps in about a month of their existence. You saw GM do a 180 turn two weeks ago. Ford will do the same, $11bn spend is not sufficient. They need to find that money someplace.

Electric cars will fall short on the range. However, their TCO is so much lower. Hence, they will take up market share fast, no doubt about that. You will still have ICEs, but they are just to address range concerns and may be some type of heavy duty loads. That does not come close to sustaining PD and Mfg footprint Ford has today.

@1ffe Electric vehicles won't be viable for the majority of Americans for another 20-25 years, at least, if not longer. It's an admirable goal for the auto industry. They just don't have the range of gasoline vehicles and the charging stations are few and far between.

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of electric vehicles and getting off fossil fuels but for the near future it's all a pipe dream of the auto industry.

For the past year I traveled regularly between Detroit and St. Louis. The fastest I did that was 7.5 hours. Double that if I had an electric vehicle.

This is how transition to electric vehicles looks like, for PD. Complexity of vehicle design goes down by more than 50%. Just imagine how Mfg hourlies will be affected, with some lag. I am sure the plan is to reshuffle remaining Ford folks into some of these now vacant roles. For some of them, it will be a rude awakening that they actually have to do some real work.

Sad but not a surprise. The actions of government toward covid is part of the number reductions.

Shades of Queen Mary and her whizbang CFO, who bailed on her and soy boy Reuss earlier this year. Just a bit over two year's since the Sunday night phone call from Aerotek. Don't give up, and realize you will get zero from Aerotek.

Looks like this was a PD only action?
Other bloated areas like IT were not touched. Maybe their time is coming next year. Or IT management is much better at hiding the bloat on their teams.

For once I would like to see management honestly report their actual staffing needs in terms of decent workers. For example, this team would operate with 5 decent workers. Instead of claiming they need 20 workers and filling 15 slots with friends, family and politically advantageous warm bodies.
The staff reductions nearly always target the 5 decent workers, so invariably additional people must be hired as 15 of the 20 slots are just taking up space.
I don’t see this ever changing until Ford is acquired by another company, then those 15/20 would be turned loose.

Ford will be merged in less than 5 years at this rate. FCA merged, ford must merge to survive.

FCA does have contract postings back up, they brought back 1000 after pausing 2500 in March. Hiring has been slow here due to the merger with PSA expected to close in February creating The company Stellantis Automobiles.

Just wondering in looking at some of the comments here. If Ford is looking at having to cut employees, why is it that contract staff feel Ford should cut their salaries direct before agency? Really interested.

Ford has really changed over the 20 odd years I have been contract emp. I used to feel like one of the team but now ... 10% pay cut (my emp forced to cut pay by ford) then pay Ford employees performance bonus in Sept. I haven't gotten laid off yet but not surprised if I were. Timing s—s.

From Quora:
For companies whose fiscal year ends on 12/31, they want to lay people off before the year end so that they can expense the severance packages. If they wait until January, then they'll be starting the new fiscal year with a huge expense sitting on their books.

Horrid tact, but not surprised. Saw a bunch of folks got promoted due to VIPs. All the while we are walking out hundreds of contract people. This is an omen to the blue stripes, we're next on the chopping block. This company is the equivalent to revving an engine with rod knock. You know that rod is getting thrown through the block, it's just a question of when.

I think the same fate is sealed with the other two companies up the road. SE Michigan will eventually become a ghost region. The days of shared equity across the blue collar to white collar spectrum are over. Will only be reserved for the chosen few. And that amount people cannot support the revenue required to run a car company.

Its permanent! Also i don’t understand some insensitive comments made by salaried folks, who don’t understand that these people will immediately lose their insurances, no severance and some may even have visa issues. I hate to say but it will never be ONE FORD, unless management starts respecting every employee be it agency/ salaried/ contract/ PS or whatever else. The timing of this was ultimately wrong.

The downside of working Agency or Purchased service is that an employer can eliminate you if you are no longer required. I think some have mistakenly believed their employment was guaranteed, especially in some areas where direct employees were continually being walked out while Agency and Purchased Service was excluded. For some, it was a good run while it lasted. Others not so much as they imagined their status for more than what it was. While not a great time, glad that some know now rather than spending tons of money during the holidays. Now at least you have a fighting chance to get an early jump on job searches.

As a contract Ford employee laid off today, the numbers are large. Ford upper management is in the process of a reorganization starting 1-2021. Why not wait to announce the layoff after the first of the year to give hundreds of families a happy Christmas! I have been either in the supply base or a Ford Employee for 25 years and not have seen as heartless act as what was done today! I always respected the Ford Family and their commitment to their employees, no longer.

Bill Ford you should be ashamed of you actions today!!!

Anyone with basic IT skills and a company laptop can generate a report on number of cdsids deactivated.

How would anyone know the number of CDSIDs deactivated directly related to this? Unless you are the IT team assigned to do this task?
