Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

How many let go in Houston?

How many (#’s or ~%) were laid off in Houston? This year alone had massive layoffs from BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, service companies. The only major complaints I’ve seen on my social media and within my network are from XOM folks. Were the layoff numbers that bad or is this a “this can’t/shouldn’t happen to us” situation born out of XOM’s “unique” culture??

PIPoffs in the years you mention. Not to the numbers of this year by any means but people were shown the door those years as well.

There are big complaints at XOM now, because XOM did not layoff in 2015 and 2016 or since 1998, so this layoff is twice as bad for XOM than other companies, who cut back deeply in 2016.

I wouldn’t even say the 1600 layoffs were really disguised. XOM is doing all this without honor, or respect for their employees, at least the rest of Big Oil are being transparent and offering decent severance packages. Not the good old X. Meanwhile, Tone deaf executives continue to reward themselves without fail, and the wood being trimmed isn’t coming from the right places (mid-level managers that contribute nothing).

Difference likely because EM hasn’t had a layoff for many many years. Even the yearly ranking and PIPs have been low due to sufficient work to keep everyone busy. Many believed what recruiters told them when they were just graduating with a BS degree that we hire for life. New mantra is we hire with a long term focus but not guaranteed for life per a VP in a forum recently. Many people at EM are second or third generation with the company. People really did plan on being at EM until they retired.

1900 layoffs plus 1600 disguised layoffs in 2020. So, a cut of about 3500 employees in the U.S. About 18% of the U.S. workforce. Vast majority in Houston.

Maybe its because XOM employees take a bit more ownership in their roles with the company. The overwhelming majority of XOM folks are talented hardworking people. In most cases it is their whole life and defines who they are. People are very hurt and are personally vested by these decisions. Either if they were impacted or having to watch their friends and coworkers loose their jobs. If you have never worked at XOM you would not understand. Sure their are a few folks that never quite fit the XOM mold. It is not for everyone. Expectations are high on individual performance. Your thrown into the water and you either sink or swim. Generally those that learn to swim thrive.

I’m seriously curious if this was a huge layoff and is the level of public consternation I’ve seen is warranted. I personally know 20 people laid off this year from all over the industry and I’ve seen more online posts from XOM people than all the others. It’s surprising, tbh....
