Impossible PIP is the new RA

The old guard is alive and well, the lone wolf whose job is to maintain their own employment rules. Doing whatever it takes to keep their director role or above. A tough club to break into for sure. They are asked to hire 100 people with a mandate to fire 40 existing through whatever means necessary. Since RA's are high profile, in comes the impossible PIP that ends right before you get your 401k match and you're left with no insurance coverage through the holidays. This is what has become of this once great American company.

@OP+18iSmx3Z - That is an absolutely perfect synopsis of the IBM culture. Exactly the same here in the UK. A thick layer of "senior technical" people or "managers" with grandiose titles whose key skills are delegation, conference call pontification and e-mail tennis. They spend their days amassing Acclaim badges or polishing up their Checkpoint profiles. During layoffs, these people outshine the real workers ON PAPER and hence the on-going exodus of core skills.

This is a big part of the problem with IBM - too much management covering their own ineptitude and employees blindly devoted to staying. The result is a lot of mediocrity, mixed with some good employees left to try to carry the load. The “retired in place” mindset has been long entrenched in IBM, because these employees realize they have little value outside the IBM bubble so cling to life support for as long as they can before having to face reality. I saw a lot of it when I worked there. Some of my peers in my team failed to perform year over year and yet we’re not made accountable. Instead, the better ones had to carry the extra load. To add insult to injury, others would take the credit.
From what I can tell, this culture still exists. I’ve seen managers promote staff that tie the line, so the culture never changes and won’t change until someone comes along and has a reality check. Then the company needs to recover. Is the new CEO going to do that and succeed? From what I’ve seen so far, I’m not so sure.

IBM is on life support. Their options to grow are almost non-existent and they will have big challenges meeting EPS and dividend expectations in 2021 and beyond. They will do whatever is necessary to stay alive which includes unethical and immoral behavior.
