Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Are they trying to run people off?

We just heard an email is coming on Thursday for more information but here is a summary of losses or possible loses.

  1. Medicare Supplement is gone after Dec.
  2. Older workers lose 2 days of vacation while younger workers gain 8 days
  3. Possible pay cuts if outside 80%-120% Pay Bands (Stated 80% will get a raise)
  4. Back to the office next Summer
  5. IPI going away replaced with something (Expect 80% in payout)
  6. Promotions based on D&I criteria not time with the company
  7. Hiring hundreds of young workers with no experience and 30 with industry experience

Yes they are absolutely trying to run off employees with years of service. They want kids fresh out of college they can hire for much less, then they will run them off after 5-7 years.

There was a time where I planned to retire from this company. I have 12-15 years left, and doubt I will stay that long.

I do plan to use the caregiver days. I used PTO in the past to help my parents. Not going forward.

Just offer a blanket MVO and be done with it. Either you’re eligible or you’re not.

"As a manager I received word at work that my dad passed. Told my AM - Mr. Sensitivity (also a lay minister) and his reaction was —I hope he's a Christian, if not he's going to hell,"

I don't know if this is true or not, but if so you don't simply have to take that lying down . He could be fired for that. Circumvent the chain of command. Ethics Hotline. If that fails, go to the media. Make an effort. That is unacceptable, and you doing nothing about it is unacceptable too.

As a manager I received word at work that my dad passed. Told my AM - Mr. Sensitivity (also a lay minister) and his reaction was

  1. I hope he's a Christian, if not he's going to hell,
  2. You don't go to heaven for good deeds and
  3. You get 1 day off for the funeral.

A man just lost his dad and this Jerk tells me this, I almost decked the MF'er right then and there.
As I walked away I thought !@# %%##^ ##^^$## !
Then when I caught the Mumps I was told that I needed to take vacation time from this same MFer. No, I have a Dr's report, Yes I have the Mumps. Code my Manager time off as SICK! He didn't want it affecting his index. Smoke cleared it was not coded and just for spite, I took 2 weeks off.
Hope this Christian/Pastor burns in H3LL.

@1foj+18iuqksx - if it's not in the contract, of course not. Maybe it will be on the table for the next contract.

Does this reduction in PTO days also apply to bargained employees through the union?

All I can say is that in 25 years, I may have taken one sick day and never a day for someone else in the family. But, just give me a sniffle and I am off for the day from now on.

Not to nit pick but I'm not sure why everyone is saying we're "gaining" three holidays. The day after thanksgiving was designated a floating holiday years ago. It was an extra vacation day to use how you pleased. If it goes back to the day after Thanksgiving, you aren't "gaining" it but are rather losing a flexible holiday to a fixed one.

They get around the "older workers" by reducing the number of PTO days based on experience. Not age. So 20 years + PTO days could be reduced to X from 25.

When I started with the company, as an experienced professional, not entry level or college hire, my package included 2 weeks of vacation, subject to accrual for the first 6 months. This was pretty insulting even for way back when. Glad the youngsters are getting 3 weeks off the bat, would question their intelligence for joining this ship wreck, but everybody needs a job and pay bills.

Bonus had gone on a reduction path, amount depends on which company you came from. Getting rid of the IPI is another step to remove payout commitment on the books. Sure, a few will get more and most will kiss that portion of possible payout good bye. I personally won't invest my time and effort "lobbying" management for extra pay, use that energy to retool and get a new job elsewhere.

Age has NOTHING to do with vacation! It’s number of years on the Job boomer.

What we heard today is they are trying to align the company benefits closer to those at Warner.
Anyone who has been around awhile knows it will be to the benefit of the company but most employees will take a hit in the pocketbook.

"Are they trying to run people off?"

Everyone still here knows the answer to that question. But, as a fifty something 25 plus year employee, they underestimate my stubbornness. You want to get rid of us, make an offer. Taking away a few PTO's ain't gonna get you what you want.

What do they mean by older people? I was supposed to get 28 days of vacation in May. Is that...gone? But 3 new holidays? What the fork?

In the year of our Lord 2020 the year of COVID, when so many of us gave up on our free time to help company get past problems of having people work from home, then thank-you is in form of taking out vacation time from people with 20 years of their blood to the company and substitute it with some three holidays that people mostly work through. Pathetic.

Then add insult to injury by taking IPI bonus part away and replacing with unknown formulae to be given based on subjective criteria.

And they always are taking benefits away (like medical supplement if you don't retire this year for age 65 and above) in the month of December.

May God have no mercy on their soul.

Hoping with all these changes comes an MVO (severance for employees that wish to voluntarily leave).

@enz, sorry, but they're smarter than that. These changes deal with how many years of service you have, not your physical age. And they apply it to everyone, at least, everyone that doesn't live in the golden tower in Dallas. It's just happenstance that employees with 20+ years of service are older in age. Thats how they will get away with it.

This is pretty much spot on based on the ATS town hall today. #2 is exactly what is stated; Older workers are losing 5 days of vacation and gaining 3 days of holidays. Younger workers are gaining 5 days of vacation PLUS 3 days of holidays.
