Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Job security

I'm getting tired of people complaining about the lack of job security at Exxon. Let me tell you something, I've been here for nearly 20 years and there was never a time in those two decades where we had job security. This is a cyclical industry. Layoffs are part of our job description. Unless you've been here for under a year, you should know that by now.

"layoffs are rare in the EM business model. The model is to run lean and mean"

Seriously? EM has always been terribly overstaffed and has the most inefficient work processes in all of the O&G industry.

25,000 employee workforce reduction since the merger in 2000. 325,000 employees cut since 1980 combined Exxon and Mobil. That's 80%. And there is no history of layoffs? I remember lots and lots of job cuts, and there was always an air of uncertainty throughout the industry as to what was coming next. Boom and bust, repeated over and over. Difference was how people handled it. Got back up and found a new job instead of wallowing in self pity and expecting the world to save them.

Surely everyone realizes our jobs were never guaranteed. However, the company did do a great job in making us believe that we were safe as long as we worked hard and performed well. We weathered the bumps and looked 10-30 years into the future. You know, the stuff we heard over and over.

What we are to learn is that the company filled us with bull c-ap and too many people willingly ate it up without question.

Both parties are at fault here.

I want my executive secretary to fix my spreadsheets, update my powerpoint presentations and make my word documents pretty and correct. Where in the hell is my silver tea service rolling down the hall in the morning. I want the Clerck hired back to deliver my printouts and maps to my desk so I can sit with my legs up reading the paper waiting while he chats up the girl in the next cubical.
Ah the good old days.

Who has complained about job security? You must not actually read before you post. Most people are complained about bad leadership period.

The reason that our folks are more vocal on this particular board is that layoffs are rare in the EM business model. The model is to run lean and mean, utilizing contractors to fill when there’s too much going on. Problem is that 2019-2020 threw that model askew. CVX/COP/BP/TOT/RDS have more frequent workforce reductions, leading their employees to expect it rather than be surprised when it happens.
Exxon is different, but I’d rather have our security for 15 years than to live on the edge at RDS for 5.

Maybe you are brownoser , let me explain you something about the EM slogan Job Security”.I think the people are rephrasing that famous phrase as a sarcasm. Now you remember! If you are sick about it, it is because you are seeing your face on a mirror.
