Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

How will you do it?

I'm not trying to rub salt into the wound or be rude but I have to ask, how will you be able to work for two or three months and actually be able to do anything when you know you are laid off? I think what Exxon is doing to people is cruel beyond any measure. Conditioning severance like that...that's just wrong. I wouldn't be able to do it.

All the people in my group who were laid off don’t have to work. They left the day they were told. I guess the few in other places who do will likely keep working so they can get paid and severance.

I won't! Garden leave for 6 weeks. I've done a reasonable hand over, but I've been mentally checked out. I will give it to them, glad they made the call to only drag it out 2 weeks, at least in my case (but does seem for many, this is the case).

Also, for those thrown into this unsuspectingly, keep applying, keep looking. Just landed my first phone interview! I'm probably taking a pay cut unless I can magically land a job in tech, but in the end this is going to be a much better situation for me with my mental health. I can't believe how toxic this place has become, especially in EMRE.

Anecdotally the people in my group, and adjacent groups, who were impacted were put on immediate garden leave and haven't really logged on since. These are people who had full workloads and also did not deal with top secret stuff (like EMIT) where the company would be super worried that they'd do something to hurt the company. If these people were put on garden leave, I'd imagine that most would be. Can't argue that some weren't, which s—s by comparison, but I think most were.

The 60-90 day thing is pretty standard at most places. It's pretty much understood that you'll do some handover the first week or two and then coast while you look for another job or just turn in your computer altogether and remain on call in case a question comes up. BP operated the same way while I was there.

I start every day with a little dance knowing I’ll be paid to leave soon.

Most people are being put on garden leave. Would you prefer that they just get taken off payroll immediately and left to fend for themselves? That’s more cruel.

Well, for one, you’re still getting paid and can use a good amount of work hours to find your next job. Also, I doubt they’re going to try and drive up your workload (and you’d be a fool to comply).
