Brick and mortar is dead and it's never coming back. It's become a massive liability.

Considering that money is being put into training "NewCollar" workers in parts of Africa... this suggests that there's a race to the bottom for cheapest possible labor.

Once the infrastructure and political stability is in place, Africa is likely to become the next low cost source of said workers... China is already in there trying to make deals.

" Different companies have different priorities ideas about where quality "needs to be" .. many companies have a pretty low bar.

Expensive high-quality items often end up costing less in the long run, because they last longer, require less maintenance, etc. Quality also tends to build customer brand loyalty. "

Re : But you have to convince the accountants that run things of the quality argument... The fact that India has a huge ofshoring market (and Brazil and China) suggests that said argument for onshoring is not flying in the offices where the decisions are made.

Put yourself in the position of a person that has budget responsibility... as long as the quality can stay at or above where it needs to be... there's no incentive at all to not offshore at present.

"Fools don’t realize that work from home is one step away from your job being sent to India, Romania, Philippines...
Speed of collaboration in a physical office is the only thing keeping every company from sending their entire workforce offshore. "

Re : If offshoring is going to happen... it's going to happen anyway in Info Tech... The only thing that really keeps anything onshore is legalities that forbid offshoring. Think Defense industry, etc.

I've worked software support and dev roles at the big mainframe shops... supported the entire world from in an office at those companies... never was permitted to logon to customer machines... so no reason for that job to be in any particular office anyway... that's just the nature of connectivity...

So it's a mirage if anyone thinks being in the office really keeps a job onshore, IMHO.

There's a target on everyone's back that won't go away until the price of labor everywhere in the world is the same... and therefore no cost advantage to offshoring.

The only real question is... "How will it play out?"

Will onshore rates drop to meet offshore rates?
Will offshore rates come up to meet onshore rates?
Will the rates meet in the middle somewhere?

Put yourself in the position of a person that has budget responsibility... as long as the quality can stay at or above where it needs to be... there's no incentive at all to not offshore at present.

So being in the office... meh... not going to forestall the inevitable IMHO.

Yes, I love WFH and it is the "new normal" for a lot of companies thankfully.
I certainly don't miss waiting in line to use the washroom.
Plus we're not polluting the air driving to and from work every day.

I miss the canteen, I miss the free air conditioning, and I urgently need some repair/replacements for all the gadgets so the answer is NO.

No. Don't want to go back to 100% onsite either. Some sort of hybrid where I go to an office or client site when it makes sense but not always.
