Germany, France, 11 other EU countries team up for semiconductor push
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Germany, France, Spain and ten other EU countries have joined forces to invest in processors and semiconductor technologies, key to internet-connected devices and data processing, in a push to catch up with the United States and Asia.
Europe’s share of the 440-billion-euro ($533 billion) global semiconductor market is around 10%, with the EU currently relying on chips made abroad.
Such dependence on foreign chips and other products has come under the spotlight during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Security concerns regarding some foreign governments have also added to worries about relying on foreign chips used in cars, medical equipment, mobile phones and networks, as well as for environmental monitoring.
The European Union earlier this year agreed to allocate 145 billion euros, equal to a fifth of its virus economic recovery fund, for digital projects.
The 13 countries said they would work together to bolster Europe’s electronics and embedded systems value chain.
“This will require a collective effort to pool investment and to coordinate actions, by both public and private stakeholders”,” they said in a joint statement.
The group will reach out to companies to form industrial alliances for research and investment into designing and making processors and look into funding for such projects.
It will also come up with a European-wide scheme known as an Important Project of Common European Interest which allows for funding under looser EU state aid rules. The group will seek to set up common standards and certification for electronics.
The signatories include Belgium, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal and Slovenia.
“A collective approach can help us leverage our existing strengths and embrace new opportunities as advanced processor chips play an ever more important role for Europe’s industrial strategy and digital sovereignty,” EU digital chief Thierry Breton said in a statement.

Won’t happen. How do European countries compete if for the majority of staff at 3pm the day is basically over and with no flexibility to stay longer if the project demands it. Against Intel maybe, which is busy fighting against its own stupidity. But never against Asian companies like Samsung, TSMC. Europe remains in low volume markets which are not interesting to huge suppliers. (I know colleagues at IFX /MUC - they are there to bridge the time to pension and are done k–ling themselves for another id–t.)

I work at Infineon.

30% of the employees here have a Dr-ing. That is a 5-year-long doctorate! Most of them do not make half as much as their US counterparts. Having worked at Intel (Germany) before, I can say with a 100% certainty, that the company has in average much more qualified employees compared to Intel. The current stuff we have in the pipeline is much more challenging from the technical point of view than anything that Intel is doing.

That particular article, however, is just empty of meaning. The EU countries did not commit to anything particular. More steps are needed to make the EU semiconductor industry actually competitive.

What is wrong with engineers at IMEC or Infineon? I think they are better than the TD engineers at Intel.

You ever talk to the IMEC folks or engineers from GF in Dresden, or Infineon

I am sure Samsung and TSMC are scared

I'm sure the EU can compete with TSMC – NOT!
