Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Would somebody explain me what is the ExxonMobil culture acccording to Exxon, please?

Put aside the Yes, Sir person, brownoser, snitcher, kiss@ss, Exxon drone, etc . adjectives that I know it is true, but How does Exxon define "align to the Exxon Culture"?. I have heard managers and supervisors talking about Exxon culture, alignment, but nobody explain what the culture is or alignment is.Do they just repeat what they hear because they do not what the Em culture is as well?

If you are talking about our official core (leadership) values, we can’t answer that question. A few years ago, they spent a ton of money researching a new set of leadership values. I don’t think they have ever been officially rolled out with any sort of training or clarity. If you want to know what “alignment with the EM culture” means as far as layoffs & PIPs, that’s unanswerable as well. It’s a catch all term they use to get rid of good people for no good reason.

That is ExxonMobil PR, not culture.

Culture is backstabbing, LTA WLB, management thoughts above technical expertise, bad decisions, short roles leading to deferred problems to make self look good. Zero clue into what management subordinates do / are working on. Poor morale. Incompitant leadership. Too many middle layers of management. Demoted upwards (if you can't handle technical work, promoted into management positions)

ExxonMobil's core values comprise “work flexibility, safety and security, recognizing human rights, integrity and diversity and inclusion.”

Don't worry if you work for XOM you will know. I suggest to keep some hemorrhoid cream handy to ease the joy of learning.

Culture includes hating risk and hating being wrong. It makes us discuss every detail endlessly to the point where you're so sick of hearing about it and the information is stale. Then you can make a decision.

Well said.

Literally mentioned what you said to my wife nearly word for word just this last weekend.

ExxonMobil is the last Soviet Republic, with party officials preaching high values and hiding the truth while dividing all the spoils amongst themselves. We pretend that we like them and they pretend that they care.

Culture at ExxonMobil is acting like you care about your employees and the communities in which you do business with nice lip service and fancy graphics prepared by McKinsey or BCG.

I recall recently our VP said he looks at the company core values at least a few times a day to remind himself of what he should focus on. I found that hilarious because he doesn't exhibit any of them and he made it sound like a religious ritual. Just imagine a VP reflecting on these five core values that should be taught to you in grade school: integrity, care, courage, and I forget the remaining two.

I wish accountability was one of them, but that means some high level folks would lose their jobs or get low ranking so of course it's a no no.

Described in the leadership behaviors. There is a pack on the intranet. We have work to do to get there.

I was just wondering this myself. First of all, what is the existing culture, and second what is the new culture we are supposed to be adopting? Our company doesn't have a Culture Manager that I'm aware of. Is this issue exclusive to the Upstream?

It depends on what you mean by 'culture'.
Explain.
