Resume

Does anyone have recommendations for a company or person that helps to write a resume?

The Manager Tools site (manager-tools.com) has excellent (free) podcasts and guidance around resumes (as well as interviewing and other topics). They do have some paid products and services too, but you can get pretty far with just the free stuff.

Make sure you ask for samples of their work and confirm that they are familiar with the specialty you're coming from as well as where you're hoping to go. Also pay with PayPal or a credit card in case their service is bad.

I tried one and they were so bad I insisted on a refund. Reading through what they prepared, it was complete gibberish. The role descriptions were based on our conversations, but I couldn't understand a single sentence in the entire resume. They clearly had no O&G experience (I chose them because they had good reviews from people in the industry I hope to transition into) and could only comment that my resume was a success according to ATS.

If you’re offered “Right Management” as an outplacement service, forget it. The don’t appeared to be set up to help scientists and engineers. You might be OK if you’re in marketing, finance or IT, as these are the only “specialist” areas that they seem to have experience with.

Honestly, find someone you are friendly with that recently got a job in an area you would like to work in, and ask them for tips or even check out their resume for inspiration if they’re willing to share.
