Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Culture - 101

  1. Soviet-style control.
  2. Inbred mgmt.
  3. Keep saying that the Titanic doesn’t turn on a dime (except to quickly PIP 8-10% this summer).
  4. Don’t even have internal job-boards for employees (which most in the outside world do) but talk about empowerment.
  5. Lag 10-15 years with respect to what the outside world in the same business has already accomplished.
  6. Forced-ranking that many in the outside world don’t practice and is counter-productive.
  7. Less-efficient compared to peers and low-cost operating companies.
  8. Still carry the megalomaniacal-arrogance of being the #1 company by market-cap, though, now far removed from it.
  9. Internally keep saying “we are tough to do business with” and do nothing to change it.
  10. Excessive layers of mgmt.

@gak+18qqobpe Actually most of us here care, hence why we are here.
People want to see if others are having similar thoughts.
When you go to work for someone there is an agreement, it’s a two way street. I provide quality work per the company and am paid in return. In this agreement it is also understood in USA culture that both parties will treat each other decently. People take their earned money and buy houses, have children, help their parents out, etc. Now back to that agreement on treating with decency. If I am the ceo or on the board then I am thinking of this when deciding how to handle and grow the company. If I am a mid level manager it is the the same. This means that I will be transparent and treat employees as part of the team. No stringing along or etc. I want to be honest in regards to layoffs to give people time to line up work. I may even create a third party department that audits rankings and layoffs to make things more objective. The feeling of “am I next for speaking up in a meeting, asking a tough question, even doing extra work assignments” is real. One question Worth asking is, is the management culture one which I can build relationships with and if not why stay? Because relationship building is how culture changes and innovation is done. When management are closed off to building relationships it’s time to get out.

@fid+18qqobpe Why does the fact someone critiques management make them a bitter person? I am always keeping a critical eye on management so that I can learn from their mistakes!!! I note the effect it has on me and others when they are late to meetings, when they do not keep their word, gaslighting, punish those of speak differing opinions, etc etc etc.

You sound bitter that society and the industry has lost and is losing respect for xom. Get over yourself. What the op said is true. There is a slave driving mentality of “just be glad you get to work here, and oh by the way we want you to only give results but not ideas or opinions”. This crushes innovation.

Experienced hire, love my job at Exxon. There’s tens of thousands like me. This board is 95% bitter people who hate Exxon. “Soviet style control,” really? You’ve obviously never lived under Soviet rule. Those who have would give their left arm to have one of these jobs.

It's called golden hand-cuffs...I don't think anyone really "likes" working at XOM but the company historically hires pliable minds out of school, over-pays them and banks on the fact that most XOM employees don't know what they don't know. Don't drink the kool-aid, go through the motions and leave when you are ready...or better yet wait until they pay you to leave.

Good points. Let us see if the geniuses at Exxon can see their Achilles heel...I wish I was at Caesar's Palace.
