Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Does Exxon do stack ranking of employees?

Just curious. If yes, what are your thoughts about it?

(I work for a small competitor and we are about to introduce Stack ranking)...

Thanks

Not sure re: details of 'Stack Ranking' and how it is done.

But - in my industry (Perdue Live Stocks), it works like this.
The Tuesday chicks - they go on the bottom of a new stack.
Wednesday next up - and so on to the next monday chicks on top.
7 stacks.
The food is dribbled down (quick-drying liquid that sticks and solidifies) from top stack and also from middle stack. We are the last industry major to still dribble from the middle stack. That's going away.
The suet dribbles down to feed all 7 stacks.

It is my understanding that over a few weeks time, the 7th level (lowest) chicks are the thinnest.
But also the tastiest!

Go figure this system.

We call forced Ranking performance assessment.. now that’s innovation in ExxonMobil! Doing the same thing and expecting a different result!

I was disgusted when Ian shared how his old PowerPoint slides years ago were just as good today! Lol.. what a disaster!

At Exxon, there are tens of thousands of employees, usually dozens or more in a group of people that are ranked together. At a small company, where a percentile range could be 1 or 2 people out of 10-20, that sounds like a horrible idea

Stacked rankings are the quickest way to destroy employee morale. It is brought up at every employee forum. Those who could change it refuse to as it is the system under which they (not shareholders) have prospered.

Yes it is a stacked ranking. Easy to find online examples of companies that have abandoned it and reasons why.

There are much better relative performance assessment techniques out there. The best I've seen are multi-dimensional matrix rankings where employees can be told where they stand on different metrics instead of a faux seriatim. The numbers then go into the soup to determine increases.

Stack ranking is highly outdated and dumb. I dont believe a young company is actually considering it.

We used to, now it's even more arbitrary.
