No Long Work Weeks at Cisco

Why do people keep complaining about working long work weeks at Cisco? Working 50-60 hour weeks is nothing. Bill Gates would put in 90 hour weeks when starting Microsoft. Elon Musk claims to put in 120 hour weeks between his companies. Those are a lot of hours. Just curious. Don't get the complaing when people put in much longer weeks.

Most are certified psychopaths and narcissists that only care about acquiring more power and money. I wouldn't be surprised if 90+ hour work weeks was true. They are master manipulators and have absolutely no empathy.

Yeah, I call BS too - I always put a dilution factor on these claims - "I work 100 hours a week" usually means maybe 60-70 hours max. I work 80 hours a week!? Maybe 50-60. No one works that much. It's the most unverifiable stat anyone in tech has used.

This is a interesting topic to me. I agree that Gates and Elon being founders of their companies and having skin in the game get way more rewards for their efforts. Makes sense. That being said as a ex Cisco employee I can't help but think that Cisco employers are lazy and ungrateful. I know it s—s working long weeks with nothing to show for it. But at least you have a job. There are thousands of unemployed engineers who would gratefully work 100 hour weeks with no pay increase just to have a job. That's heart and dedication.

It's called a "managed decline". Our product revenue is significantly declining, and we rely on overpriced acquisitions to temporarily fool Wall Street.

How dare you to tell me to work more hours, work harder, work at all. Cisco is a Layoff Factory, burn and churn, leave your employees in a CONSTANT state of fear, belittling employee, toxic boss kind of company.

Leading by fear is not a way to fun a company.

At least Microsoft and Tesla produce quality products.

But how much money do Bill Gates and Elon Musk make, and also what is their earning potential to hours worked ratio? They will likely see high and lucrative returns for putting in those hours.

I think some people complain about 50-60 hours because they know that Cisco will likely not give them anything in return for sacrificing their personal time. It's unlikely that overtime would turn into a promotion or raise or even a thank you - so they feel they are working this overtime to keep their head above water whilst gaining nothing professionally, because really, promotions/raises are reserved for the favorites and for management.

@op running a marathon is also just running 26 miles. Would love to see Elon run one (in one day in one stretch).
Hence it all depends, you have the passion for a startup and some good ideas, go for it. But do not expect everyone to do follow the same logic,some people like running or God forbid spending time with their kids when they are growing up, so they are no strangers who come to your funeral.
Consider it a contract between the company and yourself. If you were a contractor would you not declare 50 percent of your hours ?
