Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Intel should create an OS

Intel has enough capital to create new products. Staying as a hardware manufacturing company and not expanding into services is a bad idea for long time. With all the news floating other companies eating Intel's lunch, I think Intel's portfolio should include a modern OS for clients. So combined with own hardware it's own OS should be the business to go. I know this will be a while to make one to get market share. But, Intel has enough expertise to do this and should challenge itself to look into the future.

This gen of intel management hasn’t been able to create anything. Name one thing they created. Please. Lots of big words, talk talk talk....They are excellent at wasting money buying companies and investing in new areas and shutting them/selling them for peanuts. In the meantime, paying failure execs, friends and family top dollars.

These people spend money like drunk sailors. If not buying and investing in money pits and rewarding rejects, failures (Murthy, Damian, Mike bell, aicha, list is too long) they buy intel stock at high prices...it helps with the earnings per share targets and exec bonuses.

These people couldn’t even manage the gold mine, the great CPU business they inherited. they finally manage to destroy our core business.

Intel Online Services was shuttered in 2001-2002 if I remember correctly, it was way ahead of its time since 'the cloud' did not really come into play until 10 years later. Intel had long wanted to become a service company and closest they ever got was BS like charging extra to unlock CPU features (ugh....) Intel could have designed special cloud features into chips (unavailable to public) and sold CPUs as a service instead of just selling parts. But this would have never materialized, because "We're a parts company", "We don't compete with our customers", and overall lack of vision and lack of understanding of how computer industry works

Intel did have Intel Online Services, but it was a failure. Perhaps it could have taken off at some point if Intel held on longer, but it would have eventually been crushed by Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and IBM.

Intel owns the x86 architecture, but unless something has changed doesn’t even market an assembly language program based on that architecture (they left that up to Microsoft who put together MASM). Not sure why Intel would do an O/S then, let alone figure out how to monetize it.

What Intel should have done was gone into the cloud services...remember we used to have internet services 20 years ago.. We used to have very advanced data centers internally, old fabs got converted to data centers. Now cloud providers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are designing their own CPUs

I agree, Intel should create a new OS named after BS. BSOS. Because SOS!!!!!!

But seriously, wasn't this what the Open Source software group formerly headed by Imad tried to do somewhat with Linux?

You can't just create an OS from scratch and expect developers to flock to it. You also need to create a market and ecosystem to service it. Even Mac OS is based on Unix. Remember what happened to Windows Phone OS? Or Symbian?

One thing Intel has never been very good at is software, and they aren't going to reverse that now. Sorry.

lol! For sure, they should rewrite Linux in C++ or Java. Sounds like a great idea for freshman CS.

For sure Intel should look at getting up the stack. Current customers themselves are eating Intel's lunch. The biggest challenge is that Intel needs to move fast and make a bet. Because building an OS wont be easy and there needs to be a commitment. The results would only come after many quarters. Intel would need to move at a furious pace and with commitment for newer projects like this. It will all come down to operating margins. Building an OS wont get them any additional revenue but definitely cut into their margins. What argument will win internally ?

If they don't do this or find the new windows to the Intel, they will get commoditized.

Great idea. I am sure Intel can do this with their new hires?
