Thread regarding IBM layoffs

It's my second anniversary in two weeks

I was happy when I joined and excited about all the possibilities the future had to offer. That feeling held on for a few months, half a year at the most. Now I'm miserable and the only future I dream of is away from this place. What a difference two years make...

I'm sorry to hear that. I mostly enjoyed my time at IBM and follow these forums as a way to keep up to date. I chose to leave because I wasn't growing the way I'd hoped, but because I was "happy enough" if afforded me an opportunity to pick a great external opportunity for myself, vs. grabbing the first thing that came along.

If you're unhappy but in a manageable situation, my suggestion is to work diligently to find a better position/company for yourself. But don't settle for "anything" unless your mental well being is at stake. Changing jobs requires tremendous energy and you don't want to run into another bad situation, if it can be at all avoided.

For what it's worth, I can share that other top tech companies do look at long IBM stints with a negative lens. I don't think that's fair or proper, but IME it's reality. At two years, you're fine...but people hitting 5+ are having a harder time getting out.

I wouldn't consider retirement money as "in the bank". Remember Nortel anyone ?

I've worked for IBM for over 40 years. IBM has been very good to me but I've been good to them too. The managers I've had were always great. I'll retire with over $2M in my 401k.
I know many others have had a different experience and I'm sorry for that. Anyhow, that's my experience.

As someone who knew the same, but opted to stay, my suggestion is to look at all your options. (I stayed too long).) Ask yourself if you want to work for IBM for the next five years. That assumes you have that option. After asking that question, you will come to the right answer for yourself .

IBMs brand name means sh– these days.
Recruiters are only interested so that they can low ball you compared to others, check out the new post where the poster says ibm pays the worst.
If you have been here for more than 10 yrs then prepare to answer all sorts of questions like what have you been doing so long at ibm.

Take the first opportunity and get out. Tech companies don't value ibmers or ibm

Consider yourself lucky to have realized that in a few months. It's taken some many years to be aware of the hell hole they got into!

I knew my first day that I made a mistake coming here and I’m not the only person to think that. Just use the brand name to get a better job.
