Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Layer off after 16 yrs

They called a meeting Thursday and laid 18 of us off. They said it was due to COVID 19. Problem is, they kept an employee that does the exact same job as me because she has only 1.5 yrs with them. I have watched this company destroy peoples lives over the past 5 yrs with NO sense of loyalty! I wish someone could sue the hell out of them!!!!

It is interesting that they are now venturing in to AI (merger with Change Healthcare) who proudly puts on their site that AI “does not dread Monday’s” I mean who says that? My theory is that they are laying people off and using “global resources” (cheaper labor) as a place holder so they can invest more in technologies that do not require human intervention..talk about the ultimate Capitalist dream...reduction of human capital overhead so you can make more profits...OGS’s days will be numbered as well..

All are true and right. I too was a victim after 15 yrs and being paid more than the rest of the team - HOWEVER - I worked, did more than the rest, did it better, had better reviews, knew SO much more just because of my tenure, but the numbers on the spreadsheet were all that mattered. Yes, they spread out my work............may everyone left behind work that much harder, and they didn't care one bit. Glad Wichman is gone, don't get your hopes up that change at the top will help anyone but the one at the top. Witty will be the same old thing - just a new name and the honeymoon period where they can claim things will be better for clients, member, employees and the whole world - but it won't be. UHG already under fire for trying to deny more services, even by network providers, unless they are the preferred (read less costly) providers. It's never about anything but the $$$$$

Politicians have more loyalty than uhc upper management. Uhc does not and never will care about its employees. A for profit company doesn't care about their employees or their members, they care about their profits. If uhc were to close its doors tomorrow, the world would be a better place. They lie cheat and steal, and that's just how they treat their employees...

When your pay is above the average of your peers, you will be the next target. That's why if you make more, you shouldn't work harder.

Work hard doesn't get you job security. Work smart does.

Quoted from above "I have watched this company destroy peoples lives over the past 5 yrs with NO sense of loyalty!" - You are 100% correct. Under Wichmann this company has lost all sense of compassion and culture. I'm hoping that will change with his departure, but we will see.

Younger staff working more hours than the old folk just isn’t true. I was about 15 years older than the other staff members and produced 50 times more and was laid off. Hired someone to help with the workload and then distributed my work load among those that rarely worked and let me go. I’m not complaining. It was necessary and I was relieved. Not sure why I stayed so long. But do I have some stories to tell that would blow your mind. Some day they will be told.

The person that is 1.5 years can do the following:

  1. Probably younger and will work more hours.
  2. Will listen to management and do as told
  3. Will make mistakes and not catch it.
  4. Will bail on the company if things get bad (no investment)
  5. Will look cheaper for payroll costs.

The decision to lay off workers is always based on number 5.

In regards to Covid, if you are with the company or leave, remember what the company did during a pandemic and never let them off the hook. The decisions taken during Covid for a wealthy health plan is far different from a small business trying to survive on limited funds. Some businesses refused to lay off anyone during a pandemic since they had plenty of funds.

True, it is only about high salary and some of those true big under performers. Even if you were the smartest guy in the room but were paid like it , it doesn't matter. Also being on a larger team is a big disadvantage cause they can spread your work around and make it look like so to workforce governance. Same if there are no limits to offshoring your work.

They’re aggressively working to reduce their labor costs. It has nothing to do with your performance. We’re all just numbers on an Excel spreadsheet. If you’re higher paid than your peers, you’re at greater risk.

Some bean counter in finance doesn’t know and doesn’t care that you could be doing the work of 2-3 FTE.

Capitalism is about maximizing the accumulation of capital, which is simply spending less than you've earned, then investing that excess in the future. It's a tautology that whomever laid you off has decided that the 1.5 year worker, weighted you against, and on the balance decided she was worth having around more than you. The thing is, managers and their managers are measured by cost control and employee satisfaction too, and they'll lay off anyone likely to drag them down as well as infect the mood of those around them. If you're bringing home the bacon for the company as in direct sales or multiplying effectiveness by implementing more efficient process, or hiring cheaper workers to do the same work, that's one thing, but most jobs you can just plug in anyone and it rarely makes a lick of difference.

If you think "Capitalism" cares about you, you are sadly mistaken...

The "God" for this "Hell on Earth" (created by the wealthy) is money!

It's NEVER just "this company..." IT'S MAINLY ALL OF THEM...

So keep listening to all the smiling people on TV telling you how wonderful EVERYTHING is... and the problem(s) are only in "your" head... you just need to work and pray harder...
