Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Will XOM be one of those companies that realizes working from home is an option and allow their employees to do so after the COVID pandemic?

I think working from home has been a success for XOM. I wouldn’t say it is for everyone. Some people like going into the office to get away from distractions (kids, etc) at home. On the other hand, I think others have found an increase in productivity working from home due to less distractions in the office.

I am not a believer that better collaboration is done face to face. If that were the case, jobs would not be going overseas.

What do you think is going to happen long term?

You are probably not wrong but at the same time almost any job can be outsourced to India.

You don't think they have petroleum engineers, rig site managers, and geologists in India ?

You might be laughing right now but you can rest assured xom is thinking about this looking forward.

Estimated cost is about $1,2 billion all-in for site work, buildings and finishings, and parking garages.

@jgy+1974hdoq in what fantasy land do you think XOM bought the land, developed it from greenfield, then built all those buildings for $400m ?

$400m is a rounding error to the total cost (definitely in the multi billions)

Wake up people, you guys are not listening to our leaders. We should be examples to our friends and neighbors, we like to drive, we buy gas, and love to help the economy going. Just imagine if most don't drive, who will buy our gas?

I agree that any job that can be wfh 100% should be sent overseas from a pure business sense.

But I don’t think OP is talking about that....I think it is really efficient for someone to work from home when it makes sense but come into the office a little more often than WFH. An offshore (low cost country) person can’t come in at all which is a huge issue for quite a few positions where that face to face review is just more effective or you need to see something in the flesh....

Here’s to hoping exxonmobil can figure out those hybrid WFH/office jobs and let people do them with flexibility after COVID.

But hope in exxonmobil is a tall proposition these days......

If you can work from home someone in India can do your job for less.

Working from home. What a joke. Tell that to the DS working offshore in 3000 ft of water. . Anyone working from home is non core. Their works need to be sent away where it can be done for peanuts.

Just my option, on offense intended but it’s true.

Time for those WFM in the oilfield to put on the big boy pants and get a real job.

It is easier to monitor the worker at home for their productivity.
I've personally implemented several different software programs/systems for this purpose.
Some are simple and some are AI deep-fork.

So the answer is Yes.

If you truly believe that ExxonMobil and collaboration are worthy of being in the same sentence (like this one), you have missed the bus.
Which might be good - since your overseer has probably guided the bus to the riverside.
ExxonMobil from a collaboration perspective is 8th grade gym class.
Maybe you thrived on that. But it is not the future.

We are in the energy business and we want people to go out and drive. This has been the motto of our fearless leaders ever since the pandemic started. So it's very clear: We all need to drive to the office and use gas.

jobs are going overseas cause they're (much) cheaper, not because XOM thinks collaboration is better face to face.

Do you think XOM is going to let its multi billion campus sit empty while everyone works from home?

There's your answer.

The real question is will exxonmobil realize the benefits of having employees on a 9/80 schedule and change the standard 5 day work week that this ancient dinosaur keeps thinking is best (even though study after study says otherwise?)
