Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

Reason for the layoff timing

I believe that the reason for spreading the layoffs over this longer period is that the organization doesn't have the cash to pay everyone off at the same time.

I know the severance offered to Suncor is similar and they are paying it out monthly over 2 years.

Suncor will also stop severance if you find a job at 85% of your salary.

It will be interesting to see the results this week.

Isn’t severance paid out in one big lump sum payment? So how can they stop it if you find another job? That’s the best outcome!

The reason for the layoffs taking many rounds is the VP level then senior level and then manager and working all get decided and the next level sets their remaining cuts for each department. We are about half way through the layoffs to match the 2150 employees (FTE) gone as of end of today.

Don't worry , they have plenty of cash to pay you off. Between Husky and Cenovus they have accepted more than 100 million dollars of taxpayers cash via the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy. "CEWS" . If you look at the financials they have both also profited almost another 700 million dollars from the Alberta Corporate Tax Cut.
They were given a free 12 billion dollar pipeline called TMX. At the same time they are complaining that the Federal government does not support them . They tell you that they are Conservative voters that don't believe in government intervention in the their operations. At the same time the CEO pay and the C-Suite pay has done nothing but go up in the last few years while they tortured you with layoffs every Tuesday for the last five years. Make sure to mention this to your Lawyer when you visit him for a free 30 minute consultation. Don't sign anything. Fight back. You will never find a similar job again and you should be fairly compensated for this.

It happens all the time. You would be required to sign off on the package & agree to advise of new employment. You could elect not to but you don't get the severance offered unless you do. Drag it out with lawyers if you want but that will cost money. If you get 6 mo severance & get another job in 3 wouldn't you rather give up 3 mo severance for a new job? If you really want to roll the dice don't start looking until your monthly severance has been fully used & hope you find something immediately.

HR have already been caught trolling someone online whom they deemed didn't leave the company the way they wanted them to or their version of "the right way". This person took no severance package. It really has been this way and it's freaking wrong on so many levels. Their arrogance has no boundaries.

If they looked into your earnings from elsewhere you could sue them into oblivion... you own your tax records with revenue Canada, not your previous employer

HR can tell if you get a job by looking at your SIN record and EI payments. I think.
