Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Thinking about Cisco

I am planning a change companies in the next 6 months. Cisco is interesting. But please explain what "LR" means? What's the pay scale for a "Senior" engineer vs a "Staff Engineer"?

Look elsewhere. Cisco has lost its culture completely. Please look elsewhere.

Do not join Cisco unless you have no other offers. End of story.

Staff Engineer means you get hired in at the middle of a lower pay grade and you’ll have to survive at least 3 years of Labor Reductions (layoffs) to even think about getting a Senior or Technical Lead title. When LRs are constant managers balk at promotions.

Senior means you come in at the bottom of a decent pay grade and because you are starting to actually make some money either you will likely get cut soon or someone who actually survived long enough to get a raise gets cut so you can stay to save them money.

At Cisco if you work hard, you can move up the ladder and get paid. Problem is no one tells you how many steps the ladder has so eventually you get to the top, take another step, and fall off the other side of the ladder. At least sometimes you can fall into severance package of money.

I would not worry about joining Cisco. Chances are you will be part of another layoff pretty quickly. There is nothing worth working for here any more as the leadership has really no idea about their strategy for product, service or anything really. And not sure who quoted that 190k for a senior engineer and 8 weeks holiday. I assume that's a joke cause at least in our theatre there is no such thing. If you are after a high pay then there are better companies out there. And the way things look lately, if you are after a job with future and work with good products, etc - you are also better off looking elsewhere.

Trust me, Cisco isn't thinking about you.

Welcome to Cisco. You will be paid $190k as a Senior Engineer with 8 weeks of paid vacation and a yearly bonus of 30% or more. No such role as a Staff Engineer.

LR (Limited Restructuring) is a basic tenet of the People Deal.

Do not join it, they will exploit you and then lay you off eventually.

Cisco pay is below industry standard. Raises and promotions are extremely rare unless your Indian.

~ Labor Reduction is more accurate. Or FTHC, Aka Firing the Human Collateral. Ok, I made that one up but it’s pretty accurate too.

LR = "Limited Restructuring" = Layoff. It's only "Limited" if you aren't the one being "Restructured".

Cisco does so many of these they really need to come up with a new name because they are in no.way.limited.
