Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Do not give it your all

The only thing you're going to get as somebody who stands out among a bunch of employees who revel in mediocrity is more work dropped on your desk. And if you manage to do that as well they'll just keep adding more and more. You'll never get any recognition or rewards, just more work. So don't even bother.

I'm glad I am retired (I requested a surplus), but the information in these posts is incorrect, at least for the business unit I was in.

With AT&T workers, mediocre is their best. The company definitely needs new blood.

Then more you give, the more the beast demands. Those that work the hardest are rewarded with more work. Yet receive the same compensation as those that do the least.

Don't be a schmuk. Stay safely hidden in the middle of the herd.

Or better yet, if you are a talented overachiever, find employment with a competent and ethically managed organization that appreciates your contribution.

Any one who goes out of their way to be a "rock star" at a company like T is a fool. If you're truly that talented, you will have long left and either gone the entrepreneurial route, or been scooped up a by a company that will pay big money for your particular talent, those that know their sh*t have to beat companies and recruiters away.. The rest of the pretty good or mediocre fokls, there's no point in k–ling yourself for a corporation that doesn't care nor guarantees your career with them. You're simply a line item expense on a balance sheet somewhere.. So doing the bare minimum is really all you need to do... This isn't 1950's America and T isn't 1950's AT&T people need to wake up and realize this is all a game.. wage earners are just that you earn a wage at the mercy of your employer, they don't owe you anything.. so treat the job with the same respect..

At&t... where we encourage our employees to strive for mediocrity

I agree. When our company started announcing the IT outsourcing project they led us to believe with a nod and a wink they would simply be eliminating the lowest ranked and those who never tried - you know, a few on each team to get rid of the busy work they did so we could help drive the companies more valuable work.

What a waste. I was an over-achiever and all along their plan was to keep the people with average performance and average pay. All the leads and hot shots got laid off.

We have all had it beaten into our heads that companies always keep the best and layoff the worst. Sometimes they are looking for a giant salary dump and go after the high performers, the best and brightest also.

No sliding into other roles, no changing teams just out the door.

You've clearly missed your calling as a motivational speaker.

But you're not wrong.
