Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

The most bureaucratic organization ever!

Already 2 corporate lies by the CEO!

1) “we want to delegate decisions to the lower levels and empower employees (Alex)”
Reality: my team was 4 levels down from the CEO, now it’s 8 levels!!!!! These new levels were all filled by young, arrogant and incompetent minions (all with financial background, no business knowledge) from legacy Cenovus. They are going to spend their time in political squabbles to advance their career, and won’t give a sh. about their staff. Some VPs have 3 dire t reports!!!! A sad joke

2) we’re retain people on the basis of SKILLS and TALENT only
Reality: my a–!!!!! You’re retained if you come from Cenovus, regardless of your skills. It’s all about where you come from and who you know! Young incompetent who never led any team are catapulted to Director positions! Guess what? They’re all from Cenovus....

Cenovus totally blew the reorg, they are bound to fail

What does this even mean? don't need expertise at the high level, if that's the case then CVE has certainly hit the mark, heck a company where drillers dreams come true. And senior leaders that have left the company, trying to think of some good ones that left... nope, can't think of one. There are a few good leaders in CVE but not many, most have been barin washed by that crazy leadership training cult.

Which groups besides finance are going to be let go in March? Can’t see how there’s another 1000 people to go to meet their target.

This is the legacy of Alex and crew, neither legacy Cenovus or Husky are happy and I assure you we will all be even less happy come the end of March when the next round occurs. Remember they are only half way to their required lay-off number so that means another 1,000 employees need to go. Think about that as the teams get established over the next few months. Another 1,000 of us will be let go. So what’s your motivation to help them do anything? We all know it doesn’t matter how hard you work or what you do, it’s just a numbers game now. So why bother at all to do any extra lifting, it’s not going to be rewarded at all. I know that’s a bad attitude but it’s the truth. At least I will tell the truth, our management sure won’t.

Really 8 levels down? Which part of the organization let me know and I can take care of it... (reaches for axe).

The company where skill and work are not what get you anywhere but who's your coffee pal. The IT team there is one of the worst. Execution, no. Planning, no. Just a group that can't execute. Some programs have been going for years... programs I've seen in other aces completed in months.

Lol... I was at CVE a few years ago. I've witnessed managers hiring managers because they could not do their job. I've seen VPs and Directors violate policies and operate at odds with controls. Low credibility

I'm no longer a CVE employee but left after an eight year hell. Prior and after CVE I've been at companies much more mature and better operated. Management at CVE are all recycled low skilled individuals. If you become incompetent in one area, simply go run another area. Just get out before your discovered. Most of the leadership are politicians that would not survive in any of the other top tier companies out there. My life improved dramatically after leaving.

One more note: for anyone who's actually worked outside of Pan Canadian, AEC, Encana, CVE would notice how underwhelming CVE leadership are. Given most have lived with only four walls their whole tenure, they just don't see it.

This is have Cenovus has operated for years...Most of the upper management has only worked for one company and think they are smarter than the major oil companies. Oh yea they get their high priced MBA's then all of sudden know how the world works and collect their $6MM/year salaries. The only reason Cenovus has survived this long is the core people at the field level and engineering that make the daily oil production. Cenovus does not want leaders...they want you to follow and be directed by the incompetent leadership team...

So what? Build a company with less bureaucracy and run Cenovus out of business. These companies have us so brainwashed into thinking that our lives revolve around them that we can't see we can make our own choices. I m tired of talking about these washed up old companies. Time to create something new and exciting for myself.

Dude,
Have you not been paying attention. This is your new company, welcome to Cenovus and the hell we’ve worked with for years. I got to be honest this is how it is so if you don’t like it try and get a package in March because it will never change. Progression is not based on skill but on how well you can s— up.

You learn just to shut up and smile like your VP is the smartest guy on the planet when really they are mo–ns. That’s how you survive around here.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Cenovus. I'm not at CVE anymore, just come here to check up on what is going down (this site does actually reflect the mood of the company).

Yup, this sounds like the Cenovus I left, glad I'm gone. Those that got layed off are better for it, might not seem like it now but it's true.

Not sure what you expect.... Cenovus has been cut hard in the past with a lot of senior leaders leaving the organization. When you purchase another company typical you want your own to retain the higher positions. Husky outnumbered Cenovus 2.5:1, why would we keep husky management if we bought the company want to assert control. At a high level management doesn’t need all expertise, it is important to retain technical talent thoughout the org

I guess it depends which part of the organization you are in. We got flooded with heritage HSE staff and they now outnumber us 2:1.
They seem like good people, but we laid off a bunch of loyal, dedicated, exceptionally talented people to make room for them...it makes no sense.
