Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Just about to join IBM GBS!

I'm just about to join IBM Global Business Services, having read some of the comments on here. I'm worried that I may have made a bad choice. What's the atmosphere like? Pros and Cons?

Lot of people here are VERY pessimistic but I had similar fears when I joined. Although I am trying to leave now, I have had very good traction with major tech firms and consulting companies so the IBM name still holds weight. But i am trying to leave sooo lol

I second the person who said if you’re in CAI/CAS, you should be looking for an exit quickly. Leadership is absolutely abysmal. Just always have your resume up to date. Accenture, Deloitte, and even the India pure play firms will gladly hire you and give you a big pay increase. Leave at your first opportunity to do so.

You just went from pot to fire....prolonging the eventual death of IBM.

This applies at every point in your career - take the best job available, give it a chance, find opportunities to improve your skills (on job and on your own time) to update your skills. This is true no matter what company you are at.
The best part about IBM are the friends I’ve met.
You’ll be fine.

If no one else hires you, take it. It’s a job, but it will not be a career.

It’s fine. Just depends which part of GBS you’re in.

As long as you’re far from the brutal regime in CAI/CAS...(global leadership in that part of the business are really awful), you’ll be fine, maybe you’ll even enjoy yourself.

There are some great people, and some pretty cool work going around.

GBS is awful. Their services are not valued by the market.

My advice to my cs graduated son was to avoid IBM if possible.
Find a company that is growing financially and NEEDS to treat the employees well for retention. He has worked for companies who treated employees well, like back in the old IBM days.

Having IBM on a resume used to be an asset but now may be a liability.

After the Aker era, I made career decisions based on how to thrive and survive in the industry, not just how to survive within IBM.

Network like outside of IBM - find how the industry views IBMers.
Always be prepared with the skills to find a new job.

You should be running... it is probably going to be the worst decision you ever made.
