Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Do What's Right

First, I am NOT an HR troll. Just a long time IBMer that tries to be honest.

I don't like seeing that people sit doing nothing and earning big salaries because IBM s—s or because you're waiting for the layoff. As long as they pay you a big salary, it is not ethical to intentionally fail to earn it.

If IBM s—s, leave. And maybe you will be laid off one day, but that day is not today. I understand and agree that we have a right to be angry. But being angry does not entitle you to free money. If you cheat IBM by taking money you don't earn, what makes you better than the execs we criticize for doing the same thing?

So earn your pay or leave. There is no other honest choice.

I am 100% utilized but contribute 1% of my potential...

My management doesn't care...

I estimate I am about 18% utilized, and I contribute about 30% of my potential capacity. So in the company’s eyes, I am performing 12% above expectations. As such, I get a healthy raise each year, as well as a bonus. Will this last forever? Of course not. But it will last long enough to set me up for a great retirement. Pretty good gig if you ask me.

This is exactly why we rebalance the workforce (RA). The Folks saying they are idle now always weren’t, in fact they were probably once complaining that they were overworked. Now business has changed, accounts have terminated and customers have left. People are not 100% utilized and the system will catch up with them and weed them out and error on the side of cutting too many. It’s just a matter of time. This gravy train will not last forever.

OP sez... "As long as they pay you a big salary, ..." Are you kidding? When was IBM a leader in big salaries for, say, developers? They are downright hostile to developers with their lower than average salaries and cargo cult agile and painfully ill informed managers who insist on adding puerile technical commentary despite their manifest ignorance.

Let me FTFY.... "As long as they pay mediocre wages in the tech universe and have clueless FLMs (who couldn't even name a popular programming language) and subject you to random acts of drive by management, you should do whatever actually gets you through the day." I think, OP, that's what you really meant to say. You just said it badly.

Why don't you tell this to execs who lays off hardworking employees.

Just wait till the end of March and you'll see the bloodbath.

It's true, when do you ever see a managers spouses being laid off? Never.
But they'll always lay off some of the few workers doing all the work.
Then they have nerve to put more pressure on the last one or two left.
It's disgraceful

There is nothing wrong with criticizing your employer, its leadership and direction. Otherwise, there can be no improvements. Much as people talk about doing nothing, it’s just talk. IBM has too many measures and supervisory layers (upon layers) to not get noticed quickly. Most of the postings, as I see it, are from dedicated people who were unjustly impacted but found no recourse, so come here to vent, hoping things will improve. Until Ibm grows again, more IBMers will leave or let go soon enough.

You have it all backwards. If the company pays me for doing nothing, that is the company’s prerogative. I’m just playing THEIR game. In case you haven’t noticed, it is the fools “doing all the work” that are first to get laid off. “Ethics” has nothing to do with it. Just play the game and take in the cash. To do otherwise is a fool’s choice.
