Does anybody know how the COBRA monthly premium is calculated?

I signed up for COBRA starting the beginning of February.

While expensive compared to the subsidized rate I paid as an employee, COBRA worked out to be cheaper than the cheapest plans on the exchange but with the same level of coverage I had as an employee.

I believe that you're still getting a break because a big company like BNYMN gets a better group rate. In my case, I'm paying around $569/month (individual coverage). While not inexpensive, it's cheaper than the minimum $700/month I was seeing on the AHCA exchange. COBRA coming from a smaller company would likely be much more expensive.

It's been a while, but COBRA was like double what we paid in health-insurance. As one personnel director told me, it's meant to be SOMETHING but not a good thing. Now that they sometimes have Obamacare available that is likely better than anything COBRA related.

I wouldn't think cobra would be that expensive with an HSA. But if you could probably get better coverage from medicaid or some other state insurance.

If youI usually forego Cobra, how often are you getting displaced?

We had it twice in the last 30 years... not enough to have a standard way of handling Cobra.

I usually forego Cobra because I simply can't afford it. I'm single with no dependents. It's ridiculously expensive .

Companies usually pay 60%-80% of your premium - you pay the rest while employed.
If you choose COBRA, you will have to pay 100%, but you won't need to go through any acceptance process or deal with restrictions about pre-existent health conditions.
