Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

How has the company rewarded your loyalty?

My current boss didn’t realize that the fact that I worked all year late weekdays plus weekends and taking care of many issues with no system support and supporting many organizations, didn’t seem to be enough to get monetarily recognized (not even with those small gift card amounts). I was loyal and I got NOTHiNG in return.

post id @1mis+19BGSkRY . It really surprises me that someone else thinks loyalty is worth something here.

Unless you are at the very top, you are a cost line item on a balance sheet. I am an overachiever by nature so it really stings to not do a good job. But I can only get kicked in the teeth so many times. I will let you pay me to search for a new job. Penny wise and pound foolish. All you had to do was give me a small bonus and say thanks. Now it’s going to cost you way more.

AT&T is like a tree full of monkeys. The monkeys at the top of the tree look down and see a whole bunch of smiling monkeys. The monkeys at the bottom of the tree look up and see nothing but a$$e$.

Loyalty and At&t cannot be used in the same sentence. Try it. Doesn't flow.

I was loyal for my first 7 years.
Zero sick days.
One day my boss made a big deal of my perfect attendance and gave me a pen.
A crusty old veteran asked what the pen was for.
"7 years of perfect attendance"
"Wow" he said. "I call in sick 10 times a year and you know what I get?"
"No"
He said "I get a few thousand in pay. Enjoy your pen."

That was in 1986.
An a harbinger of things to come.

Work.
Get paid.
Make as much $$$ as you can.
Use their rules. Follow all their edicts to a "T"
Be smart enough to play stupid.
Massage management's egos....then laugh as you walk away.
Profit.
Win.

No one cares here!
I can't disclose the details here, but before I retired - I decided to take the initiative on some risky projects to streamline procedures which resulted in decreased timelines for service AND most importantly save the company money. In fact, I save millions 10's of millions of "M" & "C" dollars over about 5 years. My boss and above had no clue what I was doing it, how I was doing it, and the ancillary impacts on service and subordinate usage attitudes. When I wrote my A&D it was news to my boss and all the way up to EVP level who took credit for the idea, the savings, the procedures.
I had access to their files (they were dumb and I was "PC Gifted") and I read their appraisals. They all claimed especially my immediate boss extensive supervision and guidance. What a lie and I never received credit, money or accolades - just became "part of my job".
Then something occured which was not as a result of what I was doing but was initially incorrectly attributed to me. I almost got my azz fired as they looked for blame, they denied that they knew anything about what I was doing and hung me out to dry. Upon further investigation it was determined that I and some of my procedures were innocent and I and my crews were cleared. I never heard an apology and that incident made me seriously start looking for another job. I found a promotion in career path and left. I told my folks as I was leaving to quit the procedures that I invented because of the failures in the network and warned them that they were saving millions of $ but putting their careers at risk. The employees stopped, the company went back to spending millions of dollars and my replacement was called in to find out why expenses shot up and he had no clue. Couldn't tell them what we were doing, my old employees didn't discuss and some of them transferred out. Bottom Line is:

  1. This company can't think outside the box.
  2. This company says it rewards creativity - IT DOESN'T
  3. This company says it is supportive - IT ISN'T
  4. This company does not pay for performance.

My advice. If you don't current work for T then don't. If you do currently work for T, plan an exit strategy and just show up and act positive till you can move on. Don't take chances, smile a lot,
tell your bosses what they want to hear and cover your back.

At my last annual review, about a year ago, my boss was surprised at the things I was working on. He had no idea (too large a group perhaps?). I was interfacing multiple groups, helping (pushing) decide on standards to use, getting each group to design their system to work with the other group (whom normally would be a competing technology and they wouldn't talk together) and getting everyone to agree. From my boss' 20,000 foot view, I was working on project X with elements y & z and it was just humming along fine, y and z sharing information the other platform needed so I couldn't be doing much I guess. So many egos to stroke to get it to work. Part of me wonders how it's going now and part of me just laughs and says I'm not paid to care anymore

Stop trying to impress narcissistic, sociopathic, marginilizing gaslighters. Start cashing the checks and invest in anything other than at&t.

There is no loyalty.

This is quite a long thread about something that doesn't even exist.

They pay the position, not the person.

That is true, unfortunately they can't tell who actually does the work!

you thinking you're "loyal" is the same as management thinking you're "doing your job".

Everyone needs to snap out of this loyalty nonsense, no corporate daddy gives a fck about your loyalty , that's a quaint notion the old timers told you so you would be a good worker bee.. Everyone who's done this for a while knows hard work != job security , its capitalism baby! we're all expendable worker bees , so play they game with that in mind and it wont be so bad.

I am feeling it too! Doubled productivity of my co-workers. Exceeded all metrics. Covered for a peer out on disability for a year.. Worked countless OT hours and weekends. I was rated a “meaningful” employee. Seriously!!?! Lol If you rate me as a “meaningful” employee, that’s what I’ll be.

LOL, there is no loyalty at T. We are nothing but a number to them. You get X amount for salary, your group is allowed X amount for budget. Guess what, they need to cut the budget by X amount for your group. That means headcount reduction. Some groups get hit more than others. Do you think your manager thinks "Oh John, you put in so much overtime, I'm going to give you a raise!" Nope, doesn't work that way. It's a numbers driven game, you need to show "I put in X amount of hours and accomplished X." How many of those X's determines your bonus. Just be able to show you did X to save/earn X and you'll be golden.

What you all need to do is pretend that you have a lot of works to do, tell your managers you need 2 weeks to complete a task that you can do in 2 days, and then spend those extra time for your family, watching movies, go shopping ... that's how you reward yourselves these days.

i was loyal, worked extra hours and weekends, handled tech M's and IBM's inability to support our applications and was rewarded by being laid off.

Unfortunately you made the decision to do those things so you would be rewarded. The company took advantage of you and could care less. You learned a valuable lesson the hard way.
