Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Layoffs while working from home

I’ve been working from home since summer. A couple of days ago I heard that some employees that I shared the office space with before we switched to wfh were laid off a couple of months ago. That came as a bit of a shock to me, not because of the fact that folks were cut ( layoffs are something we encountered on a daily basis(, but because of the fact that months passed and I didn’t know that my(now former) colleagues are not with the company anymore.
That god me thinking. The situation where a lot of us are working from home is excellent for performing layoffs without starting a panic or any sorts of rumors and I bet the company took big advantage of that. Who knows how many people were cut during this period that we don’t even know about.

Do you not communicate with "colleagues" on a regular basis? I talk or instant message with peers on pretty much a daily basis and would know immediately if one of them were layed off. I don't understand how you could go months without knowing this.

Most corporations conduct quarterly stealth layoffs. This enables companies to quietly eliminate jobs without hurting the brand. It doesn't look good to outsource jobs every quarter.

The layoff playbook

  1. Conduct one publicly announced layoff and declare it was due to skill alignment
  2. Promote a diversity & inclusion initiative to distract employees
  3. Conduct a stealth layoff to quietly eliminate more employees

Non union. If they were, the company would have to declare a surplus 1st.

Yes. That is why they are moving all of customer care to work from home positions. The offshoring of their jobs may resume quietly and anonymously without all the drama and negative press that comes with closing down a call center.
