Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Directv will be an improved product once it's untethered from AT&T

Yes linear tv and cord cutting are real. But the biggest drag on DirecTV the product has been AT&T, hands down. Upper management for the spinoff have a cohesive idea what needs to be done to salvage what's left, and the alluded to top priority is cutting the ties to AT&T... a fraud company with garbage leadership.

DTV was far and away the industry leader in pay tv, only to be run into the ground in a few short years. AT&T bought a Mercedes, started charging customers for a Bentley, and produced a Yugo. You'll see a rapid improvement of the product now that it's not being suffocated.

This was well said and you gave a perfect analogy, @6ayp+19ADFvHc. I just have no idea what made you think of Yugo, that gave me a proper laugh!

From the DTV board

" I hear you my friend. This place (El Segundo) is a ghost town and the ones who do show up look scared and beaten. All the best engineers and managers have bailed, so all that remain are the incompetent slugs, old-timers desperate for retirement and losers. Sad.

Same talent drain is reported all over our Los Angeles centers. Thanks for nothing AT&T. "

I don't think some of the Directv people who comment understand that after the deal is complete AT&T will still own 70% and TPG 30% of the "new" Directv. It doesn't matter that you will operate as a separate entity, that the products will have Directv labels, you will still be under the guidance of these two companies. They will both have people on the board, the new ceo is an AT&T guy, and their will be plenty of other people from both companies overseeing things.

They both have a plan of what they want to get from Directv and how to make them more attractive for another sale. So if you think things are going back to the good Ole days when Directv was near the top of tv industry, not going to happen.

Acquisition by Dish seems to be the most likely outcome, if I was guessing I'd say within 2- 3 years.

Way too expensive.
DTV went from $10 a month to $120 a month after I retired.
Got the same channels and a better DVR for $57 a month from Spectrum.
And it stays on during storms, no dish to brush the snow off of.
AT&T couldn't run a lemonade stand.
I doubt there is a company in the world who hates their customers more.

The entire DBS business is on the decline. I know AT&T management folks are a bunch clueless folks, but thinking that DTV will improve is not going to happen. The way media is consumed is changing. Of course, there will be a need for some DBS-based service in certain areas, but over time, DTV is a dying business. DTV employees should be very proud of what they have accomplished and what AT&T did to the business is sad for both DTV and AT&T employees.... just satellite video delivery is not the future .

The problem is, it's not completely untethered from AT&T. They and TPG have their best interest in mind, not Directv employees. I think they will try to prop the new Directv up as much as possible, so initially it might be a better place to work. But..... they just want make Directv look more attractive, so they can sell to Dish. TPG is just in this for the profit, AT&T wants to s— as much revenue as they can out of Directv, before they completely dump them.

Let's see. We drop NFL ST next year and lose our bars and restaurant accounts, followed by the 2 to 3 million residential customers who still subscribe to DTV solely for Sunday Ticket.

This will be on top of the sustained defection of users migrating to streaming - another couple of million a year at least.

So give it 3 years at best and what will be left are 80 year olds and deep woods hermits with no other option.

Unless we come up with a talking remote to lure back the Millennials.

Yep! They’ll put in some marginal improvements and dress it up and sell it to DISH! They’ll make a profit and realize a windfall on all of the employee that will be cut!!

The new Chairman of DTV is a quick buck turnaround specialist and is in it for a big payday.
