Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Living in the past

My manager at EM always told us that we're so fortunate enough to be employed by EM because EM employees represent the 10% wealthiest in the world. We're entitled. Such an arrogance and truth be told, that's a lie. Total compensation at other companies are also great. I have access to the salary ranges of employees at my current new company and it's a lot better than EM. But why did my EM manager brainwashed me believing EM has the greatest pay?

Exactly what this person said. This may have been true for EM once upon a time, but it hasn’t been true for years - maybe even a decade or more. Plenty of other O&G companies compensate the same or even better than here. I’ve started looking for a new job thinking that I’d have to take a significant pay cut and yet I’ve already received 2 offers that are basically in the range of what I receive now. So, no, there is nothing superior about Exxon’s compensation. They just want us to think there is.

Where are you getting your info about Chevron? I don’t believe they are way way better paid. Likely similar. There aren’t id–ts running the place. All businesses pay what they have to to not lose people and no more.

Chevron, for example has better total compensation package. They offer bonus structure to most, pension, 401K, similar health/life/disability benefit and programs, and guess what - the base salary of similar grade/scale is so much higher at Chevron. Some of them retire in their 40's and 50's with millions in their nest. So?

Total compensation is similar? I’d like to hear more about these offers and your years with the company.

Would you prefer if the manager stated the truth about ExxonMobil today?
Your first day on the job, for example.

Comparing yourself to the rest of the world while living in the US is a terrible comparison when there’s people slaving away at a factory to live in a hut. That statement would hold more weight if it was 10% wealthiest in the country.

Agree - especially true if you are older and have been subjected for many years to the "salary compression" - increase hiring salaries but do not follow up across the board

One thing that probably others (peers) probably don’t do - masquerade layoffs in the name of PIP.
