We have seen layoffs in departments closely touching ours so why would we be immune? So easy to say “no layoffs here” now and then backpedal it later. It’s just the sort of thing I would expect to hear to keep people in their seats until they are ready to let some of us go. NW is no worse than other companies and is in many ways one of the best, but I have no reason to believe that they would be deliberately transparent about this, allowing the most experienced employees to find new jobs in advance. That would complicate their plans.

The key here is, “They think of their own interests first.” And why wouldn’t they? It’s a business after all. If you pay attention to what is, or is not, in the interest of the company you work for, you’ll be a bit ahead of the game.
I keep reading that this or that employee is upset because, after decades of employment at the same place, he/she was let go. Well, guess what? In today’s business environment it’s not in the best interest of any company to keep an employee around for decades — even if they move up over time. You’re better off if you change jobs from time to time. Depending on one company to be your everything is a bad bet. If you were at a company for dozens of years you had a real good run.
It's been a long time since they had a major layoff of hundreds that received widespread media coverage.
Most of the recent ones have been small ans surgical and under the radar. This won't last indefinitely. Kind of feels like something is about to drop or maybe I'm just paranoid.
Get your head out of the sand people. If you are not in an office on the top few floors of the puzzle palace you are at risk.
